On 22 ammo

toyfj40, the last 2 were links I didn't have in my favorites thank you! Matter of fact I called Havlin and talked to Cheryl, very knowledgeable lady on the particular rifle, definitely knows her business. I'll shoot it some time today and then decide on a scope mount. Mine's not drilled so I'll have to drill/tap. plus they also have a front site I'll probably put on it to work better with the rear pip. $50 more dollars and the rifle's capability should improve quite a bit, if it proves a good shooter today.
Bullseye, well thought out comments thank you for sharing them with me. I have some Swiss cleaning kits that are quite unusual and should be of interest to the group, I'll take pics and share later. In short, they are SS rods with what appears to be a migma of brass fittings to connect the rod pieces together. That's the only part that could ever come in contact with the barrel/crown and that's why they probably designed it that way. Very-very well made cleaning kits, true Swiss quality and the brass brushes are the best I've seen. Very thick bristle and very tough, nothing like the dinky stuff we buy today. I also have a container of Swiss made grease their military issued for cleaning their rifles, good stuff! But of course that's all for 7.5x55, or there about calibers. On 22s I know little that's why I asked the question....

Yes folks...
...this rifle is indeed a keeper!

As you can see it likes the CCis but after setting it up the Rem GB performed equally well. This rifle is a true pleasure to shoot. Too bad it's a rather windy day in Bama because I think we can both do better. Maybe tomorrow...

Amazing thing is this Mossber 44US has proven to also shoot the Winchesters and Zappers equally well. Is it the design that allows it to do so? Why are some rifles/pistols so particular of which ammo they can/will shoot while others seem to state: "feed me anything you've got in your box and I'll shoot it just fine"!
Winchester

Zapper

The plan is to now install a new front sight, diopter style, and drill/tap for installation of a scope mount, since it's proven to deserve both.
PS. I apologize for some of the out-of-focus pictures in my previous post but I don't have a scanner at the property.

Federal Auto Match
I just tried some Federal Auto Match. The Auto Match comes in a 325 count box for $14.??. Rated at 1200fps. I really liked this ammo. I usually run into some failures to eject with Standard Velocity ammo.....although CCI standard seems to work well. I think I've found my practice ammo....maybe even my match ammo if it stays consistent. BTW, I'm using a Mark III Competition Target.
It is wonderful to deal with professionals and Victor Havlin is a true professional! Example? I ordered a front aperture sight and a scope mount for my Mossberg 44 on Monday morning and I received them today for a grand total of $4 shipping. Now that's service and reasonableness all in one.
Pics of the sight installed, took me 10 mins to get it done, are shown below. Can't wait to shoot it again this weekend but with subsonic bullets. Any recommendations?

Re: Federal Auto Match
My 1022's as well as my MK's love the stuff too!Adam67 wrote:I just tried some Federal Auto Match. The Auto Match comes in a 325 count box for $14.??. Rated at 1200fps. I really liked this ammo. However they liked it a lot more when it was 9.50!

SD
I assumed as much, just my subtle sense of humor...gcp wrote:toyfj40, forgot to mention that this rifle was put in its plastic bag in 1986, since 1986 is stamped all over the shrink bag. I assume that's when the armory reconditioned it and put it in mothballs.
I got my 144US from CMP a few years ago.
I have the (Redfield ??) sight with it.
nice bench-rest rifle... I have no desire to go on a "hike" with it!!
I had to tweak the Mags I got and it needs some "safety" work, too...
I have to hold my thumb on the safety-tab or it locks the trigger..
another use for Duct-tape

I mostly shoot Fed#510-Champions, but a lot of Aguila-sub-sonic-LRN

Not to worry, I detected the sense of humor from the get go
I couldn't find but two 50 round boxes of Federal Gold Medal Target at 1080f/s which I'll try out Friday evening. Plus some Fiori targets but I could twist the bullet sround and round so I didn't buy them. Don't know that that's the case with .22s but if they're not crimped they probably won't be as accurate. Seems the local store was dry of match 22s.

Frankly, today I'm quite a bit perplexed. At the gun store I dry fired every 22 rifle they had available. High dollar Brownings, CZs, Remingtons, Rugers....non of them had even what I'd term a decent or acceptable trigger. High poundage and creep abounds. The best one was a Savage with plastic stock in the $100 dollar range, sweet little trigger pull.
What gives with today's manufacturers? Have we shooters become so complaisant that we've become accustomed and acceptant of such low standards? I mean all my 100 year old Mausers, Swiss and other rifles/pistols seem to be a quantum leap above today's products. What gives?

Federal Gold Medal it is!! This is 16 shots @ 50 yards....I guess she has expensive taste ($5/50)

So, I like this rifle of mine so much I had to order another, with a scope on it this time. Had to because after my wife shot it she declared "this is mine" so what can I do other than buy another one for little ol' me
All kidding aside, I've simply fallen in love with these Mossbergs

A hundred years ago they probably didn't have a full time lawyer on the staff, and the book keeper was in the back office somewhere keeping the ledger.gcp wrote: What gives with today's manufacturers? Today, the lawyers and bean counters run the business. I think *** appeal and minimum liability are much more important than building a truly functional firearm. Not always the case, but more often than not.
But it isn't all bad. That is one reason we have so many thriving after market businesses.
