mark III, Lubing the Bolt

Post by MicroGuy » Wed Aug 15, 2007 5:07 pm

I've noticed on my Mark III if you don't keep the bolt lubed (pay attention to it), it tends to dry up and grind (like any metal would, not bad, it's just not "silky smooth).

I was wondering if there's a better way to lube it??

Maybe graphite? Like grease, something that has "sticking" power? (both are a pain to clean though) Maybe a good Teflon based lube? Or just stick with a good gun oil and keep a small tube or bottle of it handy???

I know, you're thinking keep it oiled and you want have that problem. But face it, there's times when the oil dissipates and there's none on the bolt slide (well, not much anyway).

I'm only thinking of something better. Either something that lasts longer, stickier maybe, or something that will get down in the micro scratches and stay there, keeping it lubed even when most of it has already dissipated.

And, I'm only talking about the bolt slide, nothing else.

I know there's other stuff out there, my dad used to work for a oil company after he retired from the Army. And I used to have a selection of very high grade stuff like that, but seemed to have lost it all somewhere down the line through the years. Pity...

Whatchathink???

I have heard of people using moly-lube, haven't tried it myself. I put a drob or two on the bolt after cleaning and smear it around with a finger. I know really scientific. But it hasn't let me down yet, even after storing for a month or two. (there's the real sin, letting my MK's sit for that long between shooting) FWIW

Oh yeah, actual question,

I use Rem-oil or Hoppes gun lubricant almost every time. Another option may be sewing machine oil, it's made for abuse and temp.

I have used a lube called "LUBRIPLATE"for years.
I smear a very small amount all over the surface of the bolt...
I'm not sure it is still on the market as I bought a pint can of it a long time ago and still have a lot of it left...I also use it on the rails of my autos.
I have also use a Teflon based lube called "SUPER LUBE" in the same way with about the same results.

Thanks, that's what I figured, but wasn't sure if it was sacrilegious or something to use anything except gun oil.

I'll have to keep my eyes open and see what I can find, and may use that sewing machine oil in the mean time.

Boy, I wish I had that other stuff. Mad dad was selling the stuff, and he had a routine he had to do for prospective customers.

And one of the things was that one of the oils was so pure, you could drink it. And he had to take a swig of it. Tasted kind of minty really.

Real high temp stuff, stuff that lasted for ever, all kinds of stuff.

Don't know what ever happened to it, because I never would have knowingly tossed it.

I have heard of problems with some Teflon stuff. Tends to glob up, the actual Teflon separates out of the oil base or something like that, and then the plastic tends to ball up and then clog stuff if you don't watch it.

Doubt it would be a problem here, but just FYI on other stuff.....

Just about everyone that posts here has a pet lube.
Mine is bar&chain oil that is used on a chain saw. It tends to stay where you put it and heat won't bother it.
Best grease I've found for firearms is Slide-Glide Lite from Brian Enos.
You will probably find that after a few hundred rounds that the bolt does not need a lot of lube. Just be sure to keep the extractor cut-out in the breech face cleaned out and the pistol should run like a sewing machine with just a very light lube on the bolt.

Your pistol is still new, after a while that roughness will polish out of the receiver and bolt contact surfaces. Try to use lube sparingly or binding will occur from powder residue from the .22 cal ammunition. Rimfire ammo burns very dirty and tends to collect on oily surfaces. I take a few drops of oil and apply it to a clean rag, then wipe the bolt down with the lubricated rag.

Jack, having worked on chain saw for over 35 years, I have never heard of any one using it on a gun. But why not because it can take the heat on not run off, always had the opposite with chain saw owners, wanting to use cheap or used motor oil and the burn up the bar and chain because the lube all flew off on the wood. M ay have helped as a fire starter thought. How you doing , friend?
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

How ya doing Len?
I'm still lurking around here a little but have been playing with a couple of new rifles lately.
I read somewhere about a year or so ago about the bar&chain oil having a "tackifier" added to help keep it where you put it and if it will withstand the heat on the nose of a chain saw bar it should hold up under any kind of firearm heat. It also seems to pick up any unburned powder and other gunk that a .22 puts out and just get slicker.
I've been using it for a long time now and it does the job for me.
I had some trouble with a new AR-15 short stroking using different new "miracle" oils and started using the bar&chain oil and solved the problem.

Doing all right Jack, been playing with a coup;e of 10/22's a T and a standard RB carbine. The caarv\bine shoots well as stock and the T has the front ogf the actrion bedded abd the back 2 inches of the barrekl and the rest of the barrel floats and it shoots well also. Got a 10-40x50 ao TAsco on the T and an 8-32x50AO Baqrskaq on the RBm got to get tem final tuned tomorrow, so I can go andshoot small bore silhouette Sunday with one or maybe even both of them.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Not offended, just annoyed :x
I get email notices when some posts to a thread I have posted on.
When I take time to go look at the new post and find it doesn't have anything to do with the post I get anoyed....

BTW the trigger works fine!

"I s the any reason you guys can't use e-mail for your personal conversations???"

Well, seven out of eight of the posts had to do with the original question and that is above average for most forums.

I've been getting e-mails for over a year from Rimfire Central about some guy that is making a new 22/45 frame. I just read and delete without getting all worked up over it.

I don't think I've ever seen a topic started on any forum that stayed strictly on the original question, without any deviation, for any length of time.

However, Len and I will not clutter up this forum with any personal stuff anymore. You may miss some good info but thats your fault for getting a little stuffy.

I'm not near as knowledgable as Len on the Rugers but I won't be answering any of your posts in the future and I would suspect that Len feels the same way. I would not want to be wasting your time if I strayed a bit from the topic.
