Recently at a gunshow I bought a like new Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 scope to use on my Marlin 39a .22 rifle and later found out that was listed by Nikon as a shotgun scope. It has normal plex crosshairs. What is the difference and will it perform ok on my Marlin?

It will perform fine. Shotgun scopes typically have a little longer eye relief and are made to take the heavy recoil associated with shooting slugs. Another plus is they generally are designed to work well in low light conditions.
