Smith and Wesson Model 622

The LGS has a S&W 622 in good condition for $199. I don't know much about this model (or it's brother the 422).

Let me know what you think about the gun and price if you own (or have owned) this model.

the 622 is the stainless steal cousin of the 422 which is aluminum. I bought a 422 a while back and it has been a great gun 100% reliable and fairly accurate with hv ammo, the Aluminum makes it super light and it would be a great trail gun. the heavier 622 would be nice for offhand shooting. it uses model 41 mags which are plentiful and come in 10-12 round versions. $199 is a great price.

things to check are the breach face and firing pin which are said to be prone to damage from dryfiring, there are aftermarket firing pis out there and maybe barrels.

can't remember what ammo I was shooting but it was probably fed bulk. it groups better with, of all things, thunderbolts.

Nice shooting and a fine looking gun.

On the 622, I waited a little too long. I should have called the LGS yesterday morning when I first saw it. I was busy early and by the time I did a little research on that particular pistol--it had been put on hold. As a matter of fact, the store owner put me 3rd on the "hold" list.

At least I learned a good deal about the 622 and its brother the 422. As a matter of fact, I have a line on a fella that may be willing to sell one (442) soon.

FWIW, the 422 had a blued steel slide, and the 622's was stainless. Both have aluminum frames. The model numbers later changed to 2204 and 2206. Both were made with 4.5 and 6 inch barrels, and with fixed or adjustable sights. A 2206 Target model came with adjustable Millet sights and thumbrest walnut grips.

A pocket version was made with a 3 inch barrel and a shorter grip, 2213 stainless and 2214 blue. Eight round mags instead of 12.

I like the looks of these better than S&W's current 22A line. The 2213 could have sold me over Bobcats.

Good information ruger22. I did my homework yesterday and read everything you posted and then some. The "under barrel" design is unusual, but strangely appealing to me. It's hard to find someone to say something bad about these pistols.

I would like to own one from this line of Smith--IF I can get a good price. They're far from the famed S&W 41, but at $199, I should have pounced on it.

I did the snooze and lose bit with a 622 at a gun show and ended up buying a 422 with fixed sights. I found drop-in adjustable rear and the pistol is a nice shooter. If you find one in the $200 range, it would be an excellent buy.

It may be practice, me or the design but I can't shoot the 422 as accurately as I can my Rugers and 22A, but it does ok.

greener, you mentioned "drop in" sights--a 422, 6" with fixed sights in "very good" condition just came up for sale (asking $250). Where might I find such sights if I buy the gun and feel it needs upgrading?

. The seller is a 5 hour round trip (still in state)--gotta think this one over.

Not sure I'd drive 5 hours for a 622. Might take an M41 at that price.

Got to wonder how much the fuel costs are for a 5 hour trip. Is it worth it for a single item?

There aren't many things in life that I would drive 5 hours to get FREE! I just don't care to travel very far or be away from home much anymore. Even my hunting trips that used to last 4 or 5 days at a time are mostly limited to half-day affairs about an hour from the house.

As far as the gun goes, the seller will have it at a gun show this weekend (about an hour or less of freeway travel). I have to work Saturday. If he still has it (a big gamble for sure) going into Sunday, it will be worth the drive to have a look. I go to 5 or 6 shows each year--one more won't hurt AND might even find something BETTER!
