Hi Folks,

This time last year I had never owned a gun (and I will be 65 in a few months

). Anyway, I now own 6 and I'm really getting into the target shooting. I've been shooting 1200-1500 rounds per month, but like everything else, the more I learn........the more I realize I know NOTHING

Just what I need.....another addiction

Hope you will tolerate a bunch of dumb questions.

Many thanks fellows for your replies. As I said, the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know.

Although, I have come to the conclusion that when I talk to people (mostly local) who I thought were well versed with guns .......there's a lot bullship out there (same as anything else)!

I'll be asking dumb questions....

I've been shooting since I was about 8 years old. Started in the early 1950s and STILL don't know anything. Ignorance is bliss, so they say.

I've been shooting about as long as Medicine Hat and am working to know almost as much.

6 guns in a year sounds like a good start. Enjoy.

Thanks for the replies Fellows. I really appreciate it.

What initially motivated me was I was not exercising my 2nd Amendment Right. Well I took care of that

This first gun I bought was to carry.....for self defense. After talking to a lot of people I chose a S&W, Model 638 "Airweight" (38 Special, shrouded hammer). I like the fact the revolvers never jam and the shrouded hammer was unlikely to get caught on anything but you could still fire it single action if you wanted to.

First lesson learned; the lighter the gun...the worse they kick

I have a 442 and think it is an excellent choice for easily concealable carry. It is not, however, the gun I'm going to wear out because I go the the range weekly and put a couple hundred rounds through it. I shoot mine about once per month and just enough rounds to satisfy myself that I remember how to shoot it. I do have a shooting acquaintance who regularly puts 200-400 rounds through a Taurus 850. I wonder about his ability to notice pain.

I tend to stick to more comfortable guns for high volume shooting.

Greener, I believe your 422 is lighter than mine and also a .357, mine is just a .38+P. Once a month a couple of cylinders full to make sure I still remember how it operates. Switched back to the 1911 Micro for daily carry. Got new jeans and the 422 carries different and give me an uncomfortable pain in the right cheek when driving. The Micro does not do that.

Yes that is the last gun I bought (about a month ago). I've only put about 1200 rounds through it but I'm very pleased. It's my "new" favorite.

As far as shooting the 638......you are quite correct. Not something you want to do on a regular basis.

Mine is a 442 38+P (black enclosed hammer like yours). I carry mine in the front pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. Had intended to get a better holster, but this $10 holster works just fine. No pistol print on my pants and a fairly easy draw. The only difficulty is feeling around the pistol to get something else in that pocket.

SAFETY NOTE!!!

if you are going to pocket carry than the only thing you should carry in that pocket is your gun and its holster...... too much bad ju-ju with stuff getting between the trigger and it going bang in the pocket.!!!

that being said I have carried a 442 S&W as a back-up and off duty gun for about 10 years.... hard to beat a 38 snubb for ease of carry. shooting a lighter load like a Wadcutter will make practice much easier and pleasant. just remember to shoot some more powerfull stuff every now and then for practice. the lighter loads will help you from inducing a flinch when you shoot it. also a bigger grip for it will take some of the sting out of shooting your j-frame

yessir quite a few..... we have a few old colt det specials floating around my department too.....and a few LCR's

I'd say a lot of the younger guys start out with a baby glock until they learn about the j frame!
