cheryld,

You have come a long ways in a very short period of time. Good for you.

I have done many guns on kitchen tables. You just need a large cookie sheet to keep parts from rolling off. Put your Rem mat inside the cooking sheet and you will have an ideal enviroment for working on guns. A large white tile will work to, with your rem mat in the center. The key is have something to stop rolling parts. But you still need to cover opening when you know springs will fly when removed. Covered with a rag works most of the time, or inside a plastic bag.

I think you're right. I took Dave's idea to vacuum the area where I was working and then used my magnets to go thru the bag. 2 paperclips and a little dirt! Can't say I didn't try!
