Powder Coating

My son has offered to powder coat my new to me MKII 5 inch Bull. I understand the powder coating is very durable and that it does not have a flat smooth finish. Other than the non traditional look is there any other down side to powder coating this pistol?

I used to supervise a fabrication shop with a powder coat line. The pre-coating process is where the durability comes from. The metal goes through a series of chemical treatments to include acid. After this, it gets powder coated and then baked in an oven. The paint is durable, but will still scratch. Besides that, I'm not sure I would want my pistol to get the chemical treatment, which actually etches the metal, nor would I want it to go through the baking process. Just my opinion based on what I know about powder coating.

What I know, powder coat is more even and tougher than sprayed paint, but not enough that I would want it on a firearm. I would leave it as it is, or go for a firearm specific finish.

Skip the powder coat, it will make you pistol look a cheap Turkish copy. Norrels, Gun Kote, duracoat or hard chrome it.

Ruger is a nice rebluing option, they will restore your pistol's finish to near new condition.

Great idea, what do you think they would bang you for this?
