Got to agree whole heartedly with you on the 1911. Got lots of other guns and shoot them all but 1911 in.45ACP is still my favorite. Carry one every day .Bullseye wrote:I'm probably understating this a little but my favorite firearm is the 1911 pistol. I'm fond of many others but "Old Slabsides" is my first love.

You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to what forum I was in when I made that earlier post, as this is the rifle forum I guess I must post about a rifle. My favorite is the M1 Garand. There's just something about the old war horse that keeps me going back to shoot it. They are some of the most comfortable off-hand rifles I've ever shot and I like them for prone shooting as well. The AR's fine but give me a Garand anytime!

Never had one, but have shot a few. The old Winchester pump .22 was hard to beat for fun shooting.

My pet rifle these days is a Savage 93R17 BTVS that I bought for varmint and pest control around the farm.
It is a stainless steel, heavy barreled bolt action in .17 HMR that has a laminated thumbhole stock and a great trigger.

I bought a Nikon 3-9x40 variable scope for it with the BDC reticule, and with that inexpensive scope, bought at Wal-Mart, this Savage has worked out to be the most enjoyable to shoot firearm I have ever owned.
I've owned, handled and fired a lot of firearms.
The little Savage has outstanding, consistent accuracy, and recoil is low enough that you can observe the bullet strike through the scope. I have avoided thumbhole stocks in the past, but now realize that I was in error. This rifle's stock suits me very well, it's very natural and comfortable to use either off-hand or on the bench.
The .17HMR cartridge is impressive too. It's great around the farm because of its low recoil and greatly reduced danger of ricochet. I've yet to hear it ricochet at all, after a couple of hundred rounds being fired.
The expansion of the .17HMR round is explosive... A grackle that I shot a few weeks ago came down out of the tree in two pieces. - It literally blew him in half.
At ranges up to 125 yards or so, little or no hold-over is required, and the BDC reticule on the Nikon scope ( after some familiarization ) allows me to shoot confidently out to 200 yards or so on a still day.
The "sweet seventeen" Savage is backed up by another favorite, a DPMS AR-15 in .223 for larger varmints and more distant targets. The AR is a carbine but is highly modified and delivers very good accuracy for a short barreled rifle. - Nothing like the Savage but still quite good.
Those are workhorse guns for around the farm, but they have turned out to be a lot of fun to shoot.
I have really become attached to the Savage 93R17 BTVS, though. Everyone I know who has bought one of those has fallen in love with it too, so it's not just me.

Weeeeelllllllll, up until recently, I'd have been right with ya on the 1911s. But I gotta tell ya, the more I carry my Sig, the more I like it. The whole DA/SA thing and not having to deal with a safety is really growing on me.Bullseye wrote:I'm probably understating this a little but my favorite firearm is the 1911 pistol. R,

Still not convince that 9mm is the way to go caliber-wise, but I'm thinking a DA/SA in .45 might be pretty near perfect.
An empty weapon is just a very expensive hammer.
Pet gun
I have a .270 remington manufactured in March of 53 and I prefer it over any of my bigger or newer guns . P.S. I gotta agree on the 1911 topic. They are very dependable but Id rather just pull the trigger than pull back a hammer or flip a safety . And that M1 Garand is 1 of a kind Id love to see pics.

My favorite hunting gun is my Rem 700 BDL in Rem 7mm Mag with a VXIII 2.5x10 scope. I bought this back in 1975. With all of the back problems I have had I'm afraid to shoot it. It is a tack driver, holding 1 ragged hole at 100yrds with my reloads. This gun kicks like a mule. The stock on this is very pretty.
But the favorite to shoot is my/dad's Browning ATD 22LR. This gun is just a sweet shooter.
