New Mark lll upgrades

Post by Hakaman » Wed Dec 16, 2009 8:56 pm

Haka Claus came to town a little early this year. The attached photos are of my new Volquartsen Ruger Mark III Volthane Grips and Volquartsen TL2000 Rear Sight. I have used them a couple times now and they are great. They've converted a so-so shooter into a levet upward(still nothing to brag about though). I am having fun and would recommend both to anybody who wants more control of their shooting. The grips did require some trimming to fit, not bad though.

I really like that TL 2000 sight. Nice set-up!

These photos show the trimming/sanding areas that I worked on to get the grip to fit nicely. On the inside of the grip I had to "shave" off some rubber to get the grip to fit over the bolt release pivot pin and it's lever. Here is the strange part, the other trimming on the inside of the mounting screw hole came that way from MidwayUSA ??? I called them and told them about the issue and they would be more then welcome to replace it, and apologized. I thought I would try it out to see if it worked, and it did, so I did not send it back because I would probably just trim out the new one likewise. I also decided to sand across the top of the grip to have easier access to the bolt release lever, otherwise, it would be difficult to operate.
Regardless of the issues here, I would definitely recommend these grips for anybody who wants a solid, stable grip on their pistol.

What are the differences between the OEM and VQ sights?

I've had to shave material out of the same areas for smooth operation of the bolt release in VQ grips. When I modified a set of Mark II Volthane grips to fit the Mark III, prior to VQ making a set for the Mark III, I detailed the steps needed to adapt the grips including shaving out the bolt release recess. http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/vie ... =2671#2671 http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/vie ... =5755#5755

The main difference is the Bo-Mar notched sight style elevation and windage screw sight adjustments, which give micrometer like accuracy to adjustment changes. The second is the wider and flatter rear blade face, again much like the Bo-Mar sight.

Update on the Volquartsen Grips. I had to send them back to MidwayUSA because the grip did not provide proper gun support. The grips, when installed, are supposed to apply pressure on the Hammer pivot pin and the Sear pivot pin to keep them from migrating out of place. This wasn't happening with the V grips. While shooting, after about 100 rds, the gun started to not function properly. The bolt would not engage to the firing position fully. I thought the gun was dirty from shooting that day, but upon further inspection I found both of those pins had moved out of their frame seating, thus not doing their jobs. MidwayUSA is great on returns, w/o any questions asked. I was thinking of getting the wooden version?

Hakaman... I too had tried the Volquartsen grips but they were just too bulky (and ugly) for my taste. Take a look at the Herrett Nationals... really comfortable and work great. They are available from Bullseye Gear for around $60.00.

Those grips look interesting, do you need an extended mag release? How is the feel without any checkering?
thanks, haka

I used mine without an extended mag release with no problems... mostly indoor bullseye shooting though. Had no trouble with slipping even though there was no checkering. Would be an easy fix with a little skateboard tape though.
