New Ruger MKIII Hunter

Post by cheryld » Tue Dec 01, 2009 5:01 pm

I just purchased a new Hunter model today. This is my first semi-automatic pistol. Could someone please tell me how to change the front sights-I need to know how to place the inserts. Thanks Cheryl

Did you mean the rear sight? The Ruger front sight comes out with a Allen wrench inless your model is different than my MkIII

If it has the colored tubes, there is a special tool that slips between the metal and tube. This pushed down the small metal catch, then the tube slides out. The tool is made of plastic about 3/8" wide. You can use a finger nail or small pick to release the catch.

Welcome to Guntalk-onlline!

You should have a little plastic part like the "quick change key" in this package.

It slides underneath the colored tube, from the side, and unlocks it from the sight mount.

Thanks everyone. I assume the plastic tubes then go in the front hole and lock? Sorry for the "newbie" questions, but I don't want to do it wrong and lose the tubes. No directions and my gun dealer didn't know how either! Thanks all. Cheryl

welcome to the forum. No problem with "newbie" questions, it's the way to learn. I looked last night and couldn't find instructions on the Hi-Viz website. If you don't have any instructions included with the pistol, they aren't all that easy to find.

One end is larger than the other. It's been a while since I change mine but I believe it goes in from the rear.

Hi Cheryl,
I think most will agree that the green one's are easier to see. At least they are for my "old" eyes. I'm 54 now, can you imagine anybody that old?

Yes-ME! I know just what you mean about tired eyes. I have to agree, the green does seem easier, especially since we sometimes use orange targets when we shoot. Can't wait to take this to the range. I still have to work up the courage to field strip my Ruger. I have been lurking around this forum for 2-3 weeks. I have seen the videos and read the posts. Not quite ready yet-but soon................Cheryl

Welcome to the forum. I will have to look that sight up on-line and see if they have one to fit a MK III. I have a similar one on my Para P-14-45 that I think I bought from Brownells. I agree the green is the easiest to see with 55 year old eyes.

Beware, those Ruger pistol are addicting and you might find yourself buying more of them.

Don't worry about stripping that pistol. Just follow the instructions and it shouldn't be difficult. Once you get the hang of it, then you'll wonder what the big deal was. Besides, if you run into a problem, you can always come here for help.

Oh, and welcome to the forum
