Screw size, MK III
I know I've seen this before, but I'm looking for the size of the rail mounting screws on a MK III. #6-40?? How hard is it to drill these screws? Is the receiver hardened? I've got a Standard that I am thinking of putting a rail
on so I can attach a red dot scope. I've got a drill press.
Thanks,
Jeff

I believe you are correct on the 6-40 screw size.
As far as drilling a receiver I would not attempt it unless it was done in a endmill. Hard steel and SS have a tendency to cause the drill bits to walk. Beside trying to drill on a curved surface. Generally you will start with a center drill.

If you don't want to drill and tap the Wiegand rail has had good reports. Replaces the rear sight mount. The downside is you can't remove the optics and shoot the iron sights.

No, those screws are 6-48tpi threads. You can get a rail & rail screws at Jack Weigand http://www.jackweigand.com/rm2fd.html
I wouldn't drill it with a drill press without using a mounting jig or some centerpoint twist drills.
