S&W 41 Goes Click

Post by quickslider » Sun Nov 15, 2009 8:17 pm

I recently pruchased a 1965 Mint Model 41. Every once in a while the hammer drops but it doesnt go off. When this happens I remove the mag and rack the slide but the shell does not eject, leave the slide down and it shoots the same bullet just fine. This happens with different kinds of ammo and several different mags. Any help

I'd check two things. First the trigger overtravel stop. Check to ensure that it isn't out too far outward and impeding the hammer as it drops. One way to tell is to look for a shiny surface on top of the hammer, near where the hammer hook is located. If the stop is set too far, the hammer will lose some of it's momentum and give a light strike.

Next I'd check the firing pin channel for dirt or grit build up. This means removing the firing pin and its housing. Doing this has a dual purpose; one to clean out the extractor hook slot and the other is to clean out the firing pin hole. I'll bet those haven't been deep cleaned in a great while with that older pistol.

Welcome quickslider! You have come to the right place! When I bought my first 41 I was shocked to discover that I couldn't find much on the care and maintenance on these fine target pistols even given the fact that they have been in continuous production for decades. I remarked on that puzzle on another forum and Bullseye responded by creating a Sticky in the Maintenance segment of this Forum that is like an armorer's course. Bullseye has been keeping at least six 41s running perfectly in Bullseye Competition for years. You will love that 41 and it will be your favorite soon. Regards
PS, get yourself some CCI Standard Veloscity ammo. After your 41 is cleaned and lubed run a mag full of CCI SV to test function. It is the ammo that S&W uses to test the 41.

Thanks Kaz. It's my second 41. The other is a late 60's 7in with comp.

My Mod. 41 is my favorite rimfire pistol. I bought it used and have had it for 30 years. It has fired many thousands of rounds. The advice on this site is great.

Enjoy

I was having the same problem with my 41 I called s&W and told them I
was having this problem.
I was told that since I was not the original owner I would have to pay shipping and repair charges. Long story short I took it to a gun smith two days latter I had it back the trigger adjustment screw was way out and the hammer was being caught by the half cock notch on the hammer.Shoots like a dream again no more problems.
