Question about carry permit

rugger22, why not call the issuing office and just ask them a simple question and just save a lot of worrying, they sould be able togive you a simple yes or no for an answer.

Ruger 22...........If you are serious about getting your CCW permit, I suggest you just suck it up and take the prescribed course. Now I have been to at least a dozen CCW classess visiting states around me and a couple other places ok. NONE of these were BS Sessions PERIOD!!! They are taught by "Certified Instructors" with years of experience behind them, just so you know.

Now those instructors, who by the way do a damn good job, don't sit around talking about shooting everything up or blowing everything to kingdom come. 75% of the class is about laws and things you should or should NOT do when carrying a pistol. They also cover various situations that can happen to you or someone else and what to do in that second or two, to keep yourself free of injury.

The shooting part is no big thing, if you can hit a bucket at 21 feet with your weapon, then you will be good to go. You must comply with being able to put 15 out of 20 into the designated target area in must cases. This is after you fire 50 rounds of practice ammo, at the same target with both a revolver and semi-auto pistol. They you decide which action or pistol you will use for quailifying that same day.

Now military training with small arms in the service will NOT suffice in most cases that I know of regarding the issuing of a CCW permit. If you have a "Dishonorable Discharge" YOU will NOT be issued a permit!!! Same goes for those who are convicted Felon or Criminal!!!

Have to agree with you Hi Ball and welcome to the forum. See you live in IL where you are even required to have a FOID to buy ammo, they must be tough to get a CCW or as they are known in MI a CPL, concealed pistols locense. The course I too was much like the ones you mention, more into law etc tha tactics and marksmanship. Hw accurate do you have to be to hit a COM size target at 7 yards or less. We are not talking precision, just motly a point and shoot situation. Better to know the law and survive than to end up in the same jail the BG came from.

I'm not sure I agree with this statement, at least in the State of Florida..
My military service is the only qualification I offered and no one ask what my discharge was.

An email to the local clerk of court (She signs the permits) got me a phone number to the main police official who processes the applications. He gave me the definitive answer. All the statute states is "Honorable Discharge", so that's all it has to be. Whew! Just like the government, having to ask three people to get a simple question answered.

So, I guess when my budget can stand the $50, I'll apply without the class.

I recommend Chris Bird's book, The Concealed Handgun Manual. My local library system has several copies. Not perfect, but the best I've read; not an ounce of Rambo in it. He not only covers equipment and technique, but the emotional and legal aftermath of defending yourself.

There you go, go directly to the source and you will get the answer, I believe in being direct and asking the one who knows
I just have one question of you, do you carry a spare tire in your car? that is the question I ask a lot of guy with a carry permit when they say they only carry a gun if the think they will need it or go to the bad part of town. Hey the BG's live in the bad part of town and come to the good part because that is where the good stuff is. Not trying to be nasty just an old man being too damn honest. $50 is cheap, I just payed $115 for a 5 year renewal with photo.

Well, I just applied for my carry permit last Monday. Took all of about 30 minutes, including a short wait for fingerprinting and photo. Everyone seemed happy with my DD-214 and no class taken. It should be done and good to pick up by the third week of July (prescribed as 45 days or less).

I'm positive enough I've ordered another Beretta Bobcat to pick up in a few days. Then I wouldn't be "naked" if one was down for repair. I have a small inventory of parts (firing pin and all springs), but a second pistol gives total backup.

I'll post again when it's complete........

That is why I normallly carry two. Remember the fastest reload is a second gun.
