What Kind of Scope Rings

Post by Dwight45 » Sun Apr 12, 2009 1:08 am

I have a MkIII target pistol which came with a Weaver Style scope base and holes already drilled and tapped in the receiver for mounting the base. And I've just bought a BSA scope. Being a greenhorn, I didn't realize I had to buy the mounting rings separately.

Looking through Midway's huge catalog, I find several choices. There's a Weaver-style see-through (whatever that is) ring made for BSA scopes. It's a "high" ring. Then there are two models of rings that fit "standard 3/8" dovetails" made for BSA scopes, one "medium" and the other "high". Do Weaver bases have 3/8" dovetails? And what are the advantages of high vs. medium rings, or vise-versa?

Anyway, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Alright, I've already answered two of my own questions through sacrifice and study. All those listings I saw in Midway's catalog were for rings, not scopes, so I have many choices of brands. And I know now that I need the Weaver-style rings. That leaves just one question: how high do they need to be for the base of the scope to clear the sights (so I can use either), low, medium, high, extra high? The outer diameter of the objective lens bell is 44mm.

Which BSA scope do you have? What is the dia. of the scope tube?

Thanks Bullseye. It's a BSA Edge, 27X32. The OD on the fat end is 44MMs.

That scope has a 1" dia tube so that's the size rings you need for your pistol. If you want to use both the iron sights and the scope then you may want to look at the see-thru variants of the weaver scopes. These may have the clearance you need see thru scope.

Well B.E., I've taken your suggestion and ordered Weaver see-through sight rings. You and other have recommended the Weavers. I'll let you know how they work out.

The scope ranges from two to seven X. I've been enjoying shooting while standing and with both hands, as well as from a bench-rested position. Theres a nice outdoor range in my area. I'm looking forward to using its 50 yard area for bench. When I attempt to shoot one-handed I wobble a lot. But I'm in awe of you people who can do it well.
