Rust removal

I take pretty good of all my firearms, but apparently I was remiss on my 1911 (blued finish). It has developed a slight bit of rust under one of its grip panels.

What is the best way to go about removing this small area of rust?

#0000 Steel wool doused in some Rem oil will remove the surface rust without harming your blue finish.

^^^^^^^^ What Bullseye said is the #1 way to do it. Sometimes just the oil and cloth/rag works.

This is after the fact, but, I installed one of these in my gun safe. I can't report on the success of this device yet, but it is suppose to keep moisture out.

I have one in my safe. Not sure on how effective it is. I don't live in a high humidity area. The rod is hot to touch but not hot enough to be concern.

I have never used steel wool, but sometimes a rag and oil is enough. A while back I decided I needed to do something with my gun safe to prevent rust on my guns.My basement, where the safe is, can get damp. I have a bunch of my Grandfathers old guns, most don't get used as often as I would like, so they sit and don't get looked at to often. What I did was seal the gun safe door with weather stripping, then built a little shelf inside to hold a cup I fill with Damp Rid, bought at hardware store. Since doing this a couple years ago, I have experienced zero rust forming on any of the guns. I think to really get the most out of whatever product you use, sealing the safe helps a lot.

For got to mention that I store my guns in the silicone treated gun socks, too. After wiping them down with CLP...

The solution I found to avoid rust and humidity in my vault (4'x8'x8') was to leave a 60w light bulb on constantly. The long life ones will usually last for 6 months of constant use. I've not had any issues in 16 years.
