I have a Beretta Bobcat 22lr pocket pistol that I have been using lately for my carry gun.
I don't carry very much, probably because I can't for work, or I don't feel the need to carry.
But when I do carry, the Bobcat is so comfortable to carry, it makes it easy. I use CCI Velocitor
ammo which is virtually 100% reliable. It is a hollow point round @ 1435 ft/sec. The gun
is so light and comfortable, and I can reel off 10 rounds in about 2-3 secs if needed because of zero muzzle flip.
I wonder if anybody else uses a bobcat, or another 22lr for SD carry?

My old Chief used to carry as a BUG a .22mag derringer, he thought highly of it. 22's are OK for SD but I prefer a bit more POP. still its better to have a 22 in your pocket than your 45 at home if you needed it.

Not enough to get you into a gunfight, but it might be just enough to get out of one.
Far better than harsh words or a contact weapon for serious uses.

Is that thing really smaller than a modern .32, though? I've actually forgotten my KelTec P32 was in a pocket a few times, small, light, and most importantly to me - FLAT.

Velocitors or other high-end CCI is a winning plan, though. On the (extremely) rare occasions I've carried my NAA mini* I load up with CCI, Stingers or SGB/velocitors would bee the load in .22LR, I load up with CCI maxi-mags in the magnum cylinder even though they don't do much more than the LR stuff (well, louder!).

* (even less firepower than your Bobcat! 5 rounds single action)

Hak, you're right up my alley! I have three Bobcats. Various posts here have mentioned that they are my carry gun. I decided just like you, and use Velocitor for carry. The CCI figures are for a rifle barrel, though.

I found some Bobcat figures somewhere online. Velocitor still manages about 875 fps and 110 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle of a Bobcat. Not bad, and still a 40 grain to boot. Stinger is a little faster, but only 31 grains.

I like 'em. Only 14 ounces loaded, and one inch thick. I think only a Seecamp .32, or one of NAA's mini-revolvers is smaller or lighter.

Like bgreene, I'd rather have more pop so I carry a .38 spc or a .380, but high velocity 40gr .22's should get the bg's attention at a few feet. I certainly don't want to take one to show it doesn't hurt.

Been thinking about picking up a Beretta 21. Just thinking.

I'm still not comfortable with a 22 for self defense. I once new a man that was shot by a 22 rifle and took the rifle away from the attacker and beat him to death with it. I do carry a Ruger LCP 380 and that is about as small as I will go for self protection. It carries well and I often forget I have it in my pocket. I also carry a 40 caliber or 45 caliber at times but as a matter of comfort and convemience I almost always carry the LCP.

I am a firm believer in BIG BULLETS!.380 acp ia all right as a backup, prefer .45ACP but .38Spl +P's are as light as I will go for a primary. Getting old an do carry the .38 most of the time now. A little lighter than a 2 pound .45.

One of those "any caliber is fine, as long as it starts with 4" guys, eh?

Unless it's in a holster, I like the .38 in my pocket

My wife bought me a .380 KelTec about 5 or so years ago and after about 3mos of practice with it I carry it all the time. If I leave the house nothing less than my old J-frame with .38+p in it goes with me.

Usually, I carry my Spingfield XD 40, but at times also will carry Ruger Vaquero .45LC, or S&W 38/44 N frame (its a little big for concealed though). Only rarely a .22. Too darned old to run, fight, or take a whoopin.

Makes 3...

I prefer a little more fire power than a 22. The smallest for me is 9mm. Since the introduction of custom ammo the 380 now makes a good backup gun.

How does Clint Smith say it... a gun should be comforting not comfortable? Personally if I knew I was going to need a gun to go somewhere, I wouldn't go there or i would take a shotgun or rifle.....and all my friends with their long guns.

22lr is still better than nothing and a step above 25auto.
