new Mark 3 22/45 owner...trying too make sure I understand??

I have a Ruger mark 1, mark11.... just bought a 2009 Mark 111 22/45 hunter. (I called it the wife's Christmas present ????). The wife and I shoot in steel plate competition. I usually do all my own work. I want to put all the "good" stuff in the new gun (already have a C-More red dot mounted).

From what I've read here, seems to me that if I can disguard the interlock mag stuff, I should be able to use the regular Mark11/45 mags? So, what do I need for this task, the regular mark11 hammer (takes the space up). The sear and the VQ extractor while I'm in there? I'll be polishing the feed ramp etc. Which trigger , the "wider Mark 11??? or what? Anything else I missed?. Thanks, Mike

Mike all you need is the special bushing that Sam makes. It will look like this one (one of my original bushings that Sam copied with my permission)

Other than that the regular 22/45 mark II mags will work in your Mark III 22/45 without any other modification necessary. However, I suggest installing a VQ adjustable target trigger to take out some of the pre and post travel.

+1 on the magsafe bushing and VQ adjustable trigger.

I think replacing the extractor with the VQ versions is a good idea, but, I've been waiting for an extractor to start giving me problems before I started replacing them. The OEM extractors still work fine, so you may or may not be improving the pistol function with one.

If your going to remove the mag disc, some legues require that all safety equipment be there and operational. So you may want to check before you do it. The VQ sear will improve the trigger too. The trigger give you pre and post adj with out removing the trigger from the gun to adjust. But once adj you very seldom need to touch again. The VQ trigger move it back toward the frame more too.

The Clark bushing is another option. Both will give you a tighter crisper trigger break. The Clark bushing is over sized so it will be a press fit to the hammer, eliminating 1 rotating joint. Also come with a over sized hammer pin to tighten the pivot point up. This takes the play down to bare min, and still rotate freely.

You will still need to use MKIII mags in the MKIII. The MKII have a heel release.

The VQ exact edge extractor will be a nice edition. Rugers extractor are stamped are not the best quality. The VQ extractor is edm cut and will hold up better.

I thought the mkII 22/45 had a button release, so mkII 22/45 mags might work in a mkIII 22/45, maybe, possible, worth trying if you have some around already.

I'm fairly sure that mkII standard mags and mkII 22/45 mags were different like mkIII standard and mkIII 22/45 mags are, though.

Luckily Ruger mags aren't too expensive, don't forget to add an Ultimate Cliploader to the bag as well if you don't have one yet.

Yes,I need that also.. Aw, now comes the "tinker" in me... I have set screws galore... Why can't I put my own set screws in the stock trigger? Are the angles different on the VQ trigger?? I really don't think the little bit of trigger weight would be a problem in speed shooting. (Our game). I usally deburr/polish anything that moves in all my competition pistols (USPSA). We are good to go on any modifications to our guns as long as saftey is not affected (Open class). I can see some type of recoil compensation coming???? Angle ports milled into the barrel??? By the way, I'm only 68 years young..... Can't have too many guns!!!... I can only get 71 rounds into the BRP Corp. sub-gun drum, dang!! Thanks, Mike

Yes, you certainly can install your own pretravel and overtravel set screws.

You can install your own set screws, I even have a procedure for that in my technical section. The VQ trigger just has a little more material up front and the screws are externally adjustable, which makes the final fitting much easier to adjust. http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=651

Other than the upper window and locking bump the Mark III 22/45 and Mark II 22/45 magazines are identical. I use both interchangeably in my Mark III 22/45 or even in my regular Mark III with the bottom blocks swapped.

Honestly, I really like my VQ trigger's pull, break, and action ... but I sometimes miss the factory trigger's texture.
Anyone making a drop-in trigger with the VQ functionality and factory texture (or close to it)?

The closest thing commercially available is the Clark steel trigger. It is slightly oversized and takes up most of the pretravel without a screw installed. http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/22sdtls.htm#rugersteel
