Barrel length effect on accuracy.

Post by Jack D » Thu May 26, 2011 2:36 pm

While researching the possibilities for a new project rifle, I stumbled onto this:

I've always suspected this, but this confirms my thoughts that barrel length has absolutely nothing to do with group size. It does affect MV and consequently, trajectory, but does not affect accuracy if the effect of sight plane is negated. I believe this should hold true for all rifle calibers.

For fun, I ran group averages for each barrel length (down to 15"). All group averages are under 5/8" at 100 yards.

Since I like short rifles, this will play a huge part in my plans for this pending project rifle.

you mean 15" before the permanently attached muzzlebrake right? Overal length of 16" is what you meant to type...

No. I meant 15". They actually cut the bbl down to 10" in their test. I just stopped calculating averages at 15". Of course, my rifle bbl will be over 16"....by a fraction.
