I'm surprised there aren't a load of posts already over yesterday's ruling. I'll put my main 2 cents worth in.

I checked for statistics on the Chicago Police website. Chicago had 458 murders in 2009. Eighty-one percent were done with guns, or 372 murders. I didn't bother to look for woundings, robberies, and rapes where the perps used guns. Those numbers would be higher than the murders.

Says a lot about banning handguns, huh? Hundreds, probably thousands, of bad people walking around Chicago with them.

The way I understand it, Chicagoans are allowed long guns, but you have to have a permit to own them, which probably requires "connections". And, they don't allow semi-autos! At least you can suck up to some official and have a pump 12 gauge...........

I believe many folks are waiting to see what the decision really means in terms of gun rights. As I understand it, the ruling only affirms that the 2nd Amendment is an individual basic (not collective) right and blanket gun bans are unconstitutional but reasonable restrictions can still apply. The question is what is reasonable? That has yet to be determined by the courts. This means many more gun related court cases in the future. Of course the "Antis" are trying to sift through the decision looking for the cracks to impose further restrictions just like the "pros" are for less restrictions. Time will tell how this decision goes but it does "incorporate" the Heller decision as a state/federal issue and not just a local one.

or you could put it this way; Good news it was 5-4 in favor bad news it was 5-4.

If Ms. Kagan was on the bench already, I'm sure it would have been against. There are still lots of rights battles ahead, I'm sure.

I am personally in favor of any responsible citizen being able to carry anything he\she wants, with minimal reasonable restrictions as to where.

I strongly agree that he/she should be able to demonstrate safe operation of firearms. Too many gun idiots out here already. Maybe have NRA instructors give the test, you pass and get a wallet card you present when purchasing a gun.
