Gun show purchases, another Brady myth

Post by greener » Sat Aug 12, 2006 1:39 pm

One of the things you hear about the evils of gun shows is that the background checks are perfunctory and often allow sham purchases. If what I observed at the Richmond Gun Show this morning is typical, the folks selling hand guns are pretty particular about whom they sell to. Saw three different people at three different booths refused sale, two for improper indentification and one who was obviously trying to purchase one for the fellow what brung her. In all three cases, the dealers refused to sell to them. Proper ID and look ok, they sell. Improper ID or if you look fishy, no sale. Nothing like I hear in the "gun control" campaigns.

Greener, you got to remember that on a slow news day, anything to do with guns will gwt attention. Do you have an arsenal of guns and ammo in your home by theit opinion? :?:
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Do I own a firearm, yes, in fact I own more than one. Do I have ammuntion at home, yes. Therefore, I have an arsenal of weapons. The reason I go to gun shows and gun dealers is that I am building my arsenal. (Very slowly, it seems that number 4's college wants a free-will gift and offering, and No. 2 daughter has some silly idea about getting married.) I even have a long gun that holds more than 14 rounds (76 Glenfield 60), so I guess that qualifies me as a gun nut with an arsenal.

I've heard for years that the reason there is so much gun violence in the US is the lax checks at gun shows, which allow sham purchases, and just anybody can buy one, escpecially in Virginia. Quite anecdotally, I happened to be at three booths at the time the dealer was refusing sales. Those sales didn't even get to the background check portion of the sale. Just wondered how the Brady Campaign would react to the fact that the system seems to be policing itself fairly well.

Given what I've seen on the range and in the past, whether a good number of people who are legally buing hand guns for self defence are simply wasting their money is another debatable point. A good number of those folks aren't going to spend enough time to learn how to make the bullet go where they think its being aimed. That comes under shooter education and should be handled by private firearms organizations and arsenal-building gun nuts like me. Nothing should stand in the way of a legal firearm ownership, even if you don't know how to load and fire the thing.

Just another chapter to the last book I wrote.

Years ago, I dropped my long-standing membership in the NRA because I didn't like, what I believed to be knee-jerk responses to gun control issues. During the time I was not a member, I became increasingly frustrated with the gun control campaigns, even though I my only shooting involved annual weapons qualification in the reserves. Either the NRA or I changed and I'm sending them my money and writing my elected leaders concerning gun control. Of course that's not too big a deal since I live in Virginia.

Greener, you and I are a couple of baaaaaaaad baaaaaaaaad old men, at least I fit the old part and sounds like you may be getting there also. I am a shooting nut, mostly sporting clays with most any size shotgun and I have at least one of each size. Normally the back of my Montero has at least 500 rounds of various shotgun shell neatly boxed and who knows how many rounds of .45ACP and .22LR as keeping it in the vehicle is just easier than carryoing it in and out of the house every time I want to go to one of the clubs and have some fun. Can just see the headlines "Old Man and dog arrested and they had and arsenal of firearms and ammunition in their vehicle" As far as handguns, never leave the house without one, normally my SA Micro Compact in a hip pocket holster.
Len, better known as the oldman of bearandoldman. Have CCW and do carry.

If you do not have an NRA membership and are considering a Life Membership, then this is something anyone who's served their country should look into.

- NRA Distinguished Life Membership $375.00
(age 65+ or Disabled Veteran)

Any VA disability percentage level qualifies for this special membership rate.

Hell no, the dog is in charge. Maybe I can plead insanity because I'm nuts about shooting.

Bullseye: can't qualify for either of the reduced rates, so I'll keep sending them my bucks each year for a while.

Len: May have asked before, where in "Michigan." I lived in Portage(Kalamazoo) for a little over 20 years. Absolutely loved it, except for the overcast winters. My real passion is fishing and the hard part of living there was to decide which lake within 10 miles of the house to go to. Had enough feathered things to keep my gordon setter occupied and enough antlered things to mess up a good bird dog in the field behind the house. In Michigan he was my constant fishing buddy because we could stop by a DNR area for some good sniffing and pointing on the way back. Richmond (VA) is much too civilized and hot in the summer for Luther.

"Your Honor, the dog made me go to the range. I didn't want to, but he made me do it." It's legal to have an arsenal if you going to or returning from a firing range, even without a CCW. Or claim observance of a high holy day.

Had a consultant pull that one on me. I'd set a meeting with the DEQ and he emailed that he couldn't attend because it was a high holy day. After two hours of staring at various calendar's, I noticed it was the opening day of pheasant season, so I rescheduled.

Then there are other high holy days here in Michigan, trout opener, walleye, grouse, duck, deer and several others.

Yes he does force me to go to the gun club, we are open Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at noon, if we are not moving by 1PM he iil bark at me to get me moving. How do dogs know time and day? you got me. My buddy Ed and I usualy shoot sporting clays together and Bar goes through the woods with us, If we use up our alloted b/s time, he will start barking and look at the back entranc to tell u it is time to get out there and have fun, so we just do as told and afer that he is happy to just hang out with us.
He goes to the indoor pistol range but waits in the car, prefers the car at he outdoor range also. Pistol shots under the awnng type roof must bother his ear sbut shotgun blastd are no problem. Have shot many K's of shells over him.

You got that right about Michigan, nice place to live escept all that water surounding really makes a lot of cloudy days. Many days without sun is rough on people, especially my wife, she gets pretty down in the winter. We do our best to keep her spirits up.
We ive in Saginaw and have since birth some 73 years ago. Nice area around Portage, used to shoot some clays at Oak Hill Gun Club on Pline road in the middle of nowhere down there, club was run by Kevin Sheren, and probably still is.

Never expected to do anything important during trout and deer openers.
My son and daughter-in-law seemed to be dead set on getting married on deer opener until the priest explained who probably wasn't going to be there. They did get married in November and I thoroughly enjoyed my sister's reaction to fall in Kalamazoo (she had never been north of Washington, DC).

I enjoyed the Saginaw area, even those trips that were related to army reserve duties.

Well, off to my favorite fishing hole. It's an hour drive (a long distance when I lived in Kalamazoo) but the Virginia Department of Inland Game and Fisheries has a shooting range near the launch. If fishing is slow, I can try out the NCStar red dot I got yesterday.

Ma and I were married in November also on the 9th in 1957 but I was never a real deer Nov in 1957 and we took a trip through Canada to Niagara Falls and returned around Lake Erie.
Michigan is still the greatest state in the fall, beautiful colored leaves, birds to hunt, fish to catch and all the fresh fall produce to eat with them.
Nice to cover all the bases on one trip.

The only place I've seen that can beat Michigan for fall color is around West Point (NY). I've lived in Eastern NC, New Orleans, SW Michigan and Richmond, VA. All of them have something that make them great places to live. Where I live when I retire is going to be a tough decision. All I need is New Orleans sea food and cooking, eastern NC barbecue, Richmond winters and Michigan outdoors, along with the Atlantic Ocean. When I find that place, will put my money down, but it probably will need wheels.

Didn't get to try out the NCStar red dot, fishing was good and I decided to see how far my boat would get into the Chickahominy Swamp. When I found bowfin heaven, I decided that was far enough.
