When I've purchased firearms in the past year or so the NICS checks have generally taken quite a while. I put the delays down to making the purchase when a large gun show is going on in the state and things get bogged down. However, I've noticed lately that folks whose forms are submitted after mine get returned before mine. I've had these checks run 4 hours. The check yesterday only took a bit over an hour and only two handgun checks were approved after mine was submitted and before I was approved.
I got the best "reason" I've heard yesterday. If you once held a high security clearance, the checks take longer. I served in nuclear capable artillery units and had security clearances required for all that, with back ground checks, and that slows down a firearm purchase?
Is it paranoia if they are really out to get you?

Not me Sir, mine are called in and approved within a few minutes, either you are a known reprobate or the fact that you live in Virginia? Hope they don't find out that we have had range sessions together or mine may take forever to get done in the furore, for association with a person of dubious character.

You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

You mean I should stop using you as a reference?

Now that may be the real problem, at my age, I am not really sure of all of my past!!!! Possibly the Feds have kept better track of me than I have?

Before I got my CHL it was taking about and hour, then you had to wait 3 days for handguns. Once I got the CHL, 5 min for the form, cash and carry out the door. No Waiting.

It also takes longer if you're on that T-something no-fly watch list. You being a chemical specialist and all, I'm sure your name gets a lot of scrutiny. I'm not sure about that delay explanation, I've held some pretty high up clearances and my NICS check typically comes back in just a few minutes.

Do you put your SSN?
I've heard that (justifiably) refusing to do so slows things down.
I'm not sure about the security clearance bit, I think it is an urban legend. I know that anecdotes don't make data, but I was a USN Nuke and a submariner, and my checks are over before I've inventoried the goodies in the box, and were just as quick before getting a CC permit.

I bet my name is similar enough to one they have on some list. I've had airline ticket agents reading all info on my driver's license into the phone just to for a ticket. Could be I'm getting mistaken for a real bad guy.
