I was given, many years ago, a partial box (40 rnds) of Whiz-BANG .22 LR mushroom (HP) cartridges. They have head stamp "D". I was also given a second box, marked the same, but it contained .22 LR shot shells with head stamp "H" (31 rnds). I suspect these are a different brand.

Does anyone know anything about them? Safe to fire? Age? Box bottom says Canadian Industries Limited, Montreal-Canada

Both boxes in same condition. How old is it?

Looks to be 1950's or 1960's by the style of the box. On a hunch I typed in "Whiz Bang CIL" into google and got several hits. Why don't you give it a try and see if there's a clue for your catrtidges in those listings. I don't have a lot of antique ammo info so this is the best I can do.

Someone was into serious pest control. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot them after I found out if there was collector value or not. Regards

Whiz-bang ammo was made by Canadian Industries LTD. No idea when but probably before 1950. I've seen boxes on ammo auctions going from ~$35-$85.

Looks like the ammo has a notch for expanding rather than a hollow point.

No its a hollow point, the box just has a cut-away picture on it. This guy has some better pictures of the mushroom ammo with the 'D' headstamp on this link http://joesalte.server275.com/detail.php?f_qryitem=9706 It might even be better to shoot him an e-mail, he may be able to shed some light on the date. Be sure to look for a manufacturers code or lot code stamped somewhere on the box.

Thanks for the tip(s). It never even occurred to me that they might be collectable. Who'd a thunk it. People actually collect old boxes.

I was just thinking I could use them, since I can't buy any.
