Erase my ignorance......what is meant by "gun belt"

Post by Jack D » Sat Jan 29, 2011 5:28 pm

When I think of a gun belt, I think of Roy Rogers and his 3" wide belt with cartridge loops all around and two Army Colts hanging from the bottom on each side.

Somehow this picture doesn't fit my image of a modern semi-auto or revolver for todays use. When I see the term "gun belt" what are they referring to and how, exactly, is it used? On top of the one that holds your pants up? Higher above the waist? Replacing the one that holds your pants up? Why is it different than any other belt? Why should I have one? If I were buying one, what would I want and what should I look for?

Gun belts are heavier duty, normally double thickness belts. Some have stiffeners (plastic) in between the layers. They are stiff and do not pull/flex out under weight. http://www.thebeltman.net/ is one company that is popular on the CC side. Tactical belts are design a lot different do to all the gear that is hung off them.

There are some gun belts that are holsters too. http://www.banderagunleather.com/

I make my own using 2 1 5/8" blanks, glued and sewn together. I like using Velcro for the buckle setup because it gives you a more comfortable fit.

Should add, a gun belt can be a heavy duty version of an everyday belt, for holding up your pants and a holstered conceal carry weapon. Recommended for heavier weapons in either inside the waistband or outside holsters under a jacket.

My only "gunbelt" is one Ruger sells to match their branded holsters, all made by Triple K. It's 2.5 inches wide, tapering at the ends to 1.75. Worn over or slightly below the pants belt for range or field use.

Years ago, I did have a full western rig for a Single-Six. They can be a lot of fun.
