That same uncle and I took a trip to pick up a Colt Defender (1911 Officer that was tricked out) and when I shot it I knew I had to have a 1911 one day. I can't think of many other guns that left a significant impact on me. Perhaps an M1 Carbine my grandfather owned, as well as his captured Arisaka rifle he got in the Philipines. I own the latter.
Rook, as you know I am an old man as my sreen name denotes, I have a grand daughter about a year or so yoiunger than you. I was just a week short of 9 years old when on that fateful morning I remembered FDR on the radio ( that was a large wooden box with no picture tube that was ful of tubes and stuff and recieved AM radio signals) that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. Growing up in the war years the guns that still stick in my mind so well are" 1 the M1911 pistol, 2 the Thompsom sub machine gun, 3 the M1 carbine ( they built a lot of them at Saginaw Steering Gear here in town and the plant was like 6 block from where i presenty live and 4 the M1 Garand.
Guess that is why I just love shooting the 1911, I am sure there is a lod you can develope to hunt deer efficiently as you will not shoot it all the tome you do not have to worry about harming the gun with just a few occassional shots.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

I have a captured Arisaka Type 99. My Father-in-Law gave it to me as a gift when he found out I was a military shooter. He captured it from the Japanese (the home island) when he was there after the war. He was in the Coast Guard and they were part of the occupation force after the surrender. Too bad the mum isn't intact. The government had all the mum's ground off the war trophy rifles out of respect for the emperor, MacArthur didn't want him to lose face so he ordered the alterations. He had a 400 year old samauri sword too but now it rests on the bottom of Tokyo harbor, but that's another story.

My Arisaka is a Type 38. I also have the bayonet with scabbard and frog. It has the mum intact, but it has some circles stamped around it showing that it was used outside the Imperial Army. My grandfather was a 2nd gunners mate in the Navy during the end of WWII. He saw a bit of everything, including shooting at incoming kamakazis.
BTW, I'm still working with Globat (or at least I'm working, not sure they are.)

You can't yet. It's just now been fixed to where I can work on the forum and try getting it setup. I'll post here again when a working forum is setup and functional.

No, he's just saying the domain is now active and he has to build the forum data base for us to use.
So now everybody knows the new domain name! Spread the word.

Rook has a new "under construction" logo up on the new domain site now and it looks pretty good.

OK, we will have the old forum back. I've tested some stuff, even upgraded the old database to 2.1.7 with almost no problems. However, I want to try some stuff before opening it back up. This means it won't be up until sometime tommorrow afternoon.

Good job Rook, Bear and I appreciate the job you have done. Do you still want us to serve as a moderator, Bear checks all my work you know. Can I Paypal you a few bucks to help offset expenses?

Very good job! You'll have to tell me about the process. You've peaked my curiousity and since I have some time invested in this project, I'm eager to find out details.

In the end: IPB 2.1.7 chokes on MySQL 5.0. Needless to say, I was using it and that is why the scripts kept screwing up. An older version seems to work fine. Also, it appears Globat has done some improvements since the last time I attempted, because the upgrade scripts used to timeout.
I also converted the DB essentially twice. My RooK account wouldn't work intially, but it appears to be due to me fudging some stuff in phpmyadmin I shouldn't have.

Well, you did good because it's all working now. I see a few pictures that haven't linked up yet but you mentioned something about needing to manually input those.
