Is there a place on the web where I can study how to check timing on
S&W model 10 38cal, just bought one but it has got burrs ang gouges where cylinder indexs. thought timing might be off.

I checked it out best I could can't find any thing wrong thought I would make a range rod, I guess the ideal is to slide down barrel to make sure cylinder ligns up. What diameter should it be for different calibers
.357 and ( would like to make one for 44 mag to), any have any info on
this.

The bore diameter of the .357 is .346". The .44 spl or mag is .417".

with that much difference the cylinder could be off .0055 off center and
still be call in line.
I might make a bushing to go in cylinder with a .348 inside diameter or
a set of bushings say .348, .350, .352, .354 to check and see how close it
is or, is being off .0055 ok.

A little bit of misalignment is OK because the barrel has the forcing cone on the end near the cylinder. As long as you are not spitting lead or shaving it, you likely do not have an alignment problem.
