I was looking an advertisement from the March issue of the "Rifleman",
and this new SA "Range Officer" looks pretty neat. I think it is geared
for the "beginner" target shooter. Any comments on this gun?

Looks pretty good. Wonder what "extra's" they took out to decrease the price?

I think a couple are the tritium sights, and something about the guide rod.

It uses a traditional GI guide rod. No full length guide rod. A full length rod is just fluff anyway, there's no where for the spring to go or kink when it's inside the pistols slide anyway. Makes taking the pistol apart a lot simpler. Until I can get my hands on one of these and take it for a spin, I'm going to reserve my opinions. The beavertail grip safety makes this pistol ineligible for CMP service pistol competition but other pistol variations apply.

parkerized not "Armory Kote" finished, and the mag well is not beveled AS MUCH.....

Don't see anything ambidextrous, and the mags are blued.

I'll take the Kimber Custom Target over the Springfield Range Officer. Basicly the same pistol at pretty much the same price. The Kimber is a bit more refined and just plain feels better in my hand with a much better trigger...

Looks like a Milspec with target sites and a beaver tail..

it is supposed to be their TRP model with a coupe less bells and whistles... like parkerizing and not so beveled mag well

It doesn't' shoot like a Milspec!!!
I did my competitionion shooting in the 1960's and there wasn't much available but custom made "milspecs"
During that time I did a considerable amount of match conditioning, learning a lot at the Navy Small Arms Training Unit in San Diego..and more from the masters such as Clark, Giles and many others.

I just managed to get a Range Officer . I stripped it and cleaned out the excess oil, re lubeded, as necessary, and went to the range. 50 rounds of Federal 230gr FMJ were fired without a single malfunction. My only problem was that the Trigger was a little stiff. Returning home I did a full disassembly to inspect the parts.I was surprised to find many of the tricks I had learned, incorporated into this gun.
The stiff trigger was the result of the center leaf of the sear spring and after an adjustment the trigger pull was right at 4 lbs and crisp. The trigger stop adjustment was about right.
I am VERY pleased with the gun and find that anyone with less than a Masters classificationification would find the gun would perform as well as they could shoot.

it might be on my short list of "want to get" guns......

Haka.. I have to agree with you. The new E series S&W 1911 looks great. The commander size SW1911SC - scandium alloy frame - is likely my next gun purchase. They are still scarce tho. My LGS does not have any of these as yet.. and there were none at the Dixie Gun & Knife show in Raleigh last month. S&W stopped making their "old" line or 1911s (very good guns BTW) in favor of this new E series line. But that means there is a qty of inventory to clear out before the new models show up in the shops.

I took the Kimber and BOY DID IT REGRET it........3'' groups at 50ft.....NAh not impressed not even alittle bit......the RO is being used in Bullseye shooting in stock form except for some trigger work ...many shooters repaorting 2'' @ 50yds Ransom Rest.......the series II KImbers arnt even close to what the original 1911 where.....Their rideing on nothing but past reputation now.....Get a Springfield !!!! better gun to build on and all of the smiths will work with them ...cant say that for the KImber .....dont ask me how I know.......

I'd like to see ANY brand's stock, non-customshop, 1911 do that on a production scale quantity
