Still considering selling my S&W 36. Doing some research, I find the word "Pre" referenced on early models. Pre what? What does "pre" mean in relation to S&W 36's?

I found some serial number dates that says 1957 = 117770 - 125000
1962 = starts at 295000. Mine is sn 2486XX. That must mean it is prior to 1962 and after 1957. Maybe 1960-1961????

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Smith and Wesson is famous for not using consecutive a serial numbering system for their products. You're best bet is to contact them and inquire about the year of manufacture for your pistol.

They were call the Chiefs Speacial before they got the Model #M36 stamped on the frame and they started to use the letter J in the serial number. Hope this helps. :)
