That is a good read if you are interested in the old .45 Colt. I been using 6.5grs of 231 in mine and I like it real well for target shooting. If I was going to hunt with it I would work it up with several different powders and bullets.

I've been getting good results for targets with 6.9 gr Universal or 8.0 gr Unique with 250 grain LFP's.

Been thinking about dropping back to 200 gr LSWC's but the Blackhawk seems to love the 250gr bullets.

I'm pretty sure I won't go to the high pressure loads, but it's nice to know you can. .45 Colt doesn't have the same high end that .44 mag has, but the round is about as flexible. Hard to justify a .44 mag when I have the .45.

Oh I agree with you on that Mr Greener. I have a old 1972 Blackhawk in .45 Colt and really enjoy shooting that old gun. I know I could work up a good load for it if I was still hunting. That load I am using right now is just punching paper.

That 6.9 gr Universal sounds intresting to me and of corse the old stand by Unique will always do the job. There's a whole bunch of good info on that site.

I have 3 revolvers and 2 rifles in .45LC and they all seem to like the 250gr cast lead bullet. I do have some 225 gr. hollow points - Win Silvertip that shoot well in my SAA, and 5 of them live in that gun except for range visits. Something about 4 clicks of the hammer being cocked just floats my boat.

But, I have no problem with cast lead for SD loads either.

Spent an enjoyable couple of hours yesterday with two .45 colt, a .357 SA and a single six.

I keep thinking about loading the .45 colt with the 200 gr lswc's I load for .45 ACP, but the 255gr bullets I've been using do a really fine job.

They might rattle around and not be as accurate as your 255grs as mine have different OD's. My 200grs measure .451" and my 250grs measure .454". These are both LSWC's. They just might cause a bunch of unwated leading, and then again I might be wrong.

I use .452 cast lead (ratio 20:1) in 2 rifles, and 3 revolvers. I haven't notice much abnormal leading with these. I have honed the forcing cone in all 3 revolvers though. Before I did that, I was getting leading on the butt end of the rifling. The tool came from Brownells.
