Finally, it was on my bucket list. Camp Perry, Home of the National Pistol Championships. I went down for the first two days to see the Small Arms Firing school, shoot the M9 Beretta's. Then, the .22 EIC and Service pistol EIC. Then the Reeves and Distinguished revolver matches.
The SAF was informative and fun. range time with AMU instructors.
Got my introductory 4 pts for service pistol! It was a bright and sunny day, thought I had it made.
Tuesday, windy, rainy, did I mention wind and rain. My new rain gear stayed dry in the car.
But, in spite of the conditions and sub par shooting I had a helluva time!
I think I might give the whole week a shot next year!

I have to admit the first time I went to Perry I was quite impressed when I got my first look at the range. Seeing all those banks of targets lined as far as the eye could see seemed like a humbling experience. They really do have the system down pat for funneling all those competitors through each of the stages. Of course my visit to the "Wailing Wall" was quite humbling the first time too. I enjoyed it many times since. Did not make it this year, and kept feeling as if I was missing something very important. Glad you had a great time.

Well Bullseye, you missed a memorable one. Thursday, 22 day, was a miserable rainy mess. My point wasn't as bad as some, but muck boots were the order of the day. Some incredible scores were shot in spite of the wind & rain (not by me)
Friday and Saturday were really nice. Fairly calm conditions and warm.
Pres 100 & NTI were miserable also, but not as bad as Thursday.
Managed to barely shoot my class,,,sometimes.

Do you suspect they're trying to lure the National Matches away from Perry? I don't see that happening unless they own a whole lot more land than they advertise for the campground. Got to have a long way for the impact zone. Plus, 400 campgrounds isn't nearly large enough for 1200-1500 competitors.

I'm thinking it's in the thought process. With no concrete plans for that big a change for at least the next 5 years. But changes do have to be made on the target turning equipment. Elevated shooting points and elevated target turners would be nice. Having a covered firing line would be really, really nice, but I don't see that ever changing.
They've been actively discussing electronic targets at the higher levels and from what I understand, any changes that direction are years, if not decades, down the road. My personal preference would be to retain the turning cardboard targets. There's visiting and friends made during the walks back & forth to the targets.

Yeah but in the overall scope of things they do also eat up a lot of time in the overall match. Cutting back on that would expedite the whole process of running a match on that large of scale. Instead we can always swap stories of "the one that got away", catch up with old friends, and generally reminisce at the wailing wall or around commercial row if they cut out the walking time.
Since that is a multi-purpose range, I don't see any addition of coverings for firing points. They do set up firing line canopies for the smallbore competition but again there are far less shooters involved in that level of competition than either Pistol or High Power rifle.
