I took my 16yr old daughter & her 15yr old boyfriend to thier first steel match Saturday. She shot her marklll 22-45 in the 14-18 yr old pistol class against all boys who were older & more experienced than her. They shot five 8" targets at 25yds, five times thru the course. She had two misses total & she placed 2nd. Her boyfriend shot my 10-22 in the 14-18yr old rifle class with a good mix of ages & genders. They shot six targets about 10" & torso shaped at about 30yds, five times thru the course. Halfway thru his 4th run the red dot went crazy & he missed the last two steels & all 6 of them on his last run. I figured out that the sight had some how shifted & I put my 3X9X32 scope on & he re-registered & shot the course again with a 3X scope that he was not at all familiar with & had good times with two misses & he placed 2nd in his class as well. They had an absolute blast & let me tell you as dad & shooting coach/ mentor I couldn't be any more proud of both of them. They're planning another shoot this fall & we're going to train & practice & they are both determined to do as well or better & I can't wait. We had a whole lot of fun shooting in this match & I attribute our success largely to things that I have read & learned on this forum & passed on to them. So, thanks to Bullseye & all the rest of you for a super forum where a guy can ask ?'s & learn & pass it on to the youngins & keep them interested in one of our greatest pastimes. When we're shooting it gives me an opportunity to speak into their lives & at the end of the day a guy can't ask for much more than that. Thanks again guys, now I've got guns I need to go clean. In the future place some blue locktite on the screws to keep them in place during the rigors of competition.

I have all the mounting hardware loctited in place but It was an internal malfunction. I haven't taken it apart yet but my guess is that the piece of spring steel that holds tension against the inside tube opposite of the adjusting screws broke. Even with the adjusting screw completely removed the reticle will only come to about four inches left of center at 30yds so all of the adjustment is from that point to way left of center.When it happened he started shooting way right & when I looked thru the sight the dot was about 3/4 of the way to the left side of the scope tube. When you back the screw all the way out the spring steel should push the reticle clear to the right side of the sight like the elevation one will push it all the way up when the screw is backed off. It was on a muzzleloader passed to me from my step father so it has seen its share of heavy recoil but it was supposedly rated for muzzleloader & shotgun. It's way out of warranty so I'll take it apart & have a look see inside & I might be able to replace the spring if that's indeed what happened. But I'll get a better quality sight to use for comp in the future. Or get him used to iron sights, I think at that distance shooting steels he'd be much faster with open sights anyways. They had a blast shooting steels & I was able to make a quick change & he shot again & was able to stay in the running so all in all it was a great experience.

A reflex style sight may be in order for the plates.
