Here's mine! Win 94/22
I don't use it for plate matches but it's a good one. Maybe a little pricey and harder to find now.

The Winchester 9422 and the Marlin 39A are probably two of the best choices for your needs. The 94 has a better trigger than the 39A but the Marlin's take down and accuracy of the microgroove barrel make the 39A a close competitor.

Marlin added the cross bolt safety and the rebounding hammer to the Model 39A in 1988 and also changed the model designation to the 39AS.

You will not be unhappy with it.
Here's a picture of mine. I've had it about 20 years or so. It's a bit heavy to lug around in the woods these days, but it's a straight shooter.

I have a Marlin 39A I got new in 1963 and a 39A Mountie, made in '69 that I found a couple of years ago. These days I prefer the Mountie, but you can't go wrong with either of them.
Winchester made the 9422 which is well thought of, and Browning makes a little lever gun that is also supposed to be good.
I am not impressed with the Henrys.

This is my Marlin 39-AS I purchased new about 6 years ago. It's very accurate and it's action is butter smooth. It's getting harder to find all steel and Walnut .22's anymore, and when you do they don't come very cheap. Bill T.

Don"t overlook the Henry...
It is a great rifle in all its versions and a blast to shoot. accurate as any of them, especially for plates.

Tigerbeetle, welcome to the forum. That is one good looking Henry, thinking of buying one myself, sure hope it looks that good. Price wise for a shooter, I don;t really think you can beat a Henry.

Thank you, Sir. IMHO, the wood was worth the rifle. In point of fact that is why I bought it. I was actually at the gun show looking for an inside the belt carry holster for my .380. Just made the mistake of walking by it, and coming back 45 minutes later to see if it was still there. The rest is history, as they say. And it is a fun gun to shoot. Now I know why by 82 year old brother in law still goes on about his 39A that is older than dirt. Well, so is he for that matter.

And I'm not that far behind. TB

my "favorite" is my '77 39a
but the universe is "outa-whack" unless each 39a is paired with a .30-30
