A shooting acquaintance switched his focus from handguns to .22 rifles and is slowly talking himself into benchrest shooting. He has recently moved from a CZ452 to a Sako with a custom 2 oz adjustable trigger, custom stock for bench rest and has a barrel on the way. To go from serious plinker to competitive shooting, he probably has to junk all this, including the rest.
I fired a few rounds Saturday and learned that doing this well also requires some changes in my technique. I had a cheek weld on the stock and that moved the POI. And since I did it inconsistently, the POI was inconsistent.
I did learn that I "need" a better rest than my Caldwell sandbags. I'm not sure that his setup is all that much better than my 10/22 with the Green Mountain barrel. Will be interesting to find out.
