another rimfire scope question.

I have a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5 that I intend to use on my Remington 541S. It is a non-AO scope. Most of my shooting is 25-50 yards and an occasional 75-85 yard shot. I would like advice on whether to use the Leupold without AO or go to some cheaper scope with AO.

Non-Adjustable Optic (AO) scopes are generally set for around 150 yards. Shooting at distances shorter than that can cause parallax errors. This is where the AO scopes help the shooter, at closer distances the parallax can be adjusted out with the AO scope. If you're shooting a target where the scoring area is very small for that distance, like a smallbore rifle target for instance, than having an AO scope is the way to go. If the scoring area is larger, like in a light rifle target, than an AO scope is not as necessary as long as you use a "spot weld" for your cheek placement. Consistent cheek placement on the stock will minimize any parallax error by keeping the aiming eye in the same alignment shot after shot.
