Will a Mk III Receiver and barrel work on a Standard?

Post by schiesz » Wed Aug 20, 2008 10:25 am

I'm trying to determine if a new Mk III barrel and receiver will work with an old Ruger Standard model frame. A friend just got a new vq barrel and receiver for his Mk III and will give me a decent deal on his old parts, which I would love to use to update my grandpa's old standard.

I know I have seen people install things like a TacSol Barrel/Receiver on a standard model, so I think it may be possible, but wanted to see if anyone had any insight on this.

Thanks,

schiesz

Welcome to Guntalk-Online!

Yes, I've fitted a Mark III barrel to a Standard/Mark I frame. But without a frame modification the bolt hold open feature will not work. Here is a picture of a Mark III receiver mounted on a Mark I frame.

Not all receiver will directly swap onto a given frame. Sometimes fitting is required to the front mounting lug to allow for proper receiver positioning.

Hope this helps.

Excellent. Excellent. A few followup questions:

Do you have any references to the frame modification?

What is a good price for the Mk III barrel/receiver?

Those are grips that I made for myself several years back. I took some old American walnut shooting trophy plaques and recycled them. I have big hands and I wasn't overly fond of the size of the standard Ruger grip, so I made my own custom grip. I emulated the grip angle of a 1911 and shaped it to the form I wanted. I also had some fun checkering them. Here's some more views of this grip.

I've been known to make some grips from time to time. I made these for my Marvel.

And a set of 1911 trainer grips for a Model 41.

When I get bored of the same old customization thing, I branch out into the furniture business.

I don't have the frame front lug modification listed, sometimes it varies by individual pistol.

I just noticed you left off a critical part of the question about receiver to frame fit - the Mark III receiver is off a 22/45. Typically the 22/45 receivers are peened at the factory to tighten up the frame to receiver fit.

This means that a 22/45 receiver doesn't directly swap over to a regular metal frame without some fitting. That dent in the receiver has to be pressed out. Then other fitting on the front lug could be necessary to place the bolt stop's rear mounting lug and receiver in alignment.

Prices vary by location. One question would be what is contained with the receiver - bolt, sights, type barrel, finish, etc. Remember, when you buy a receiver you're buying the serialized component. This means transferring through the appropriate FFL procedures/regulations for your state/municipality.

The seller likely is trying to recover as much of the price of another aftermarket barrel receiver as possible. The barrel and receiver are approximately 1/3 of the original pistol, therefore offering a little below that much of the new retail price is a good way to start negotiating.

Thanks. I have a hard time buying something I can make just as well myself.
