Ruger Detail Strip/VQ trigger swap tools needed?

Post by melchloboo » Thu Apr 17, 2008 2:24 pm

In examining the instructions, I did not see tools needed for the detail strip/trigger swap, other than possibly the magnet if you drop something. I would assume though that a punch is needed to move the various pins, and that using a punch on them is safe?

I used a tooth pick, punch 1/16" and needle nose pliers. Yes using a punch is safe, as long as you know what you are using it for/on, I will recommend not being rougher than you have to with the punch, you just need enough force to get the job done.

I used the punch to push the trigger pivot retainer in order to free the trigger pivot pin, I used the tooth pick to push said pin out (I used it instead of the punch because I don't like to scratch it more than I have to). I used the pliers to take out/put in the sear springs.

It is a precision instrument-do NOT force it. If it dont go there is a good reason-dont force it.

To do a trigger swap you'll need a tool for the trigger pin locking spring. A punch will work for that tool. I don't use any tools on the external crosspins. Simply pressing with my finger on the left side of the trigger pivot pin while simultaneously pressing the locking spring downwards is enough to move the trigger pivot pin to the right. Once it moves a little to the right I can pull it out with my fingers.

If you're planning to remove the pins under the grips then a punch may help there but these pins do not need much force to be dislodged.
