I am looking for more serious target stocks for my MK III Competition. Found some here "Herrett National Match Stocks" that claim they match MK II and III. I am pretty sure that this is not likely because of the mag release change but cannot find a link to the actual manufacturer. Don't trust peddlers all that much.

Pictures all show a 1911 version and say they are "similar." Similar?

Meanwhile, they photograph pretty nicely and the price is right.

Anyone tried these? On a MK III.

Anyone know how to contact Herrett? Preferably via email?

Even if the Herrett stocks (grips) aren't cut for the Mark III pistol a modification to make them fit is very easy. Here is a picture of the cut to modify a set of Hogue Mark II grips over to fit a Mark III.



The same 3/8" cut can be placed in a set of wooden grips for the magazine release hold down screw. Wood is even easier to modify than the plastic/rubber combo because you could use a wood chisel to cut a notch instead of a circular cut out for the screw head. Make a cardboard template using the screw holes to mark the position of the magazine screw and then transfer it over to the back side of the wooden grips. Use the technique similar to the one pictured here.

The square notch is for the Mark III magazine release hold down screw.

TNX Bullseye. I will keep that in mind. Meanwhile, Herritt hasn't answered my e-mail but the site says 1) the Nationals are for only MK II but the site also says that 2) for not a whole lot of money, they will make most anything. So, come to it, I may upgrade some higher than I intended.

I'll continue to wait to see what/if they say.

Also, the photos you sent of the Hogue mod you sent appears to require an "extension" release button that shows in the photo but you don't mention. How was this made? I assume it is trapped by the grip when all is installed so no additional spring or linkage is required (until the next time you remove the grip and it launches into a spider hole).

That is not correct. The picture of the grip with the extension button is one where I modified a set of Mark II Volquartsen Volthane Target grips to fit on a Mark III pistol. The top photo, with the white plastic underneath, is one of the Hogue grips modified for the Mark III. The plastic extension button is only for the VQ Grip mod.

The only difference between a Mark II grip and a Mark III grip is that little cut-out in the underside for the magazine release hold down screw. I have modified many Mark II grips for use with the Mark III and they will fit with just that little area cut out.

The main concern is how thick the wood is next to the mag release button. One does not want access to the release button restricted because the wood is too thick to activate it. Hopefully you will get an answer from Herrett. I do not have a good photo of the left side of the Herrett National grips for the Mark II, otherwise I could answer that question for you with a glance.

Meanwhile, I heard from Herritt overnight and they say, "We do stocks for both the MK II and the MK III. Yes, our stock for the MKIII has the clearance for the relocated magazine release.

So, now I guess I only need to decide how much I want to spend. So much gun stuff, so little time and money.

In regards to the Herrett National Match Stocks, I am curious if a set of these for a 1911 would fit onto a MKIII 22/45 that has had the Grip Modification done to allow the use of 1911 Grips on a MKIII 22/45.

The stocks for the MK III came. For an off the shelf item (they shipped them the same day), I am impressed. They are nicely made and finished from nice walnut, fit is good (both to the gun and to my hand) and they do work with the MK III Mag release and my oversized slide release. Haven't shot with them (save some dry fire) but they feel good and they are even some pretty.

I have already taken photos for my inventory and would share but Bullseye will have to tell me if this is possible and how to do it.

Bottom line to me so far is that if you are looking for something special in grips, take a look at Herritt's site before you spend a lot more money elsewhere. I will probably get some of his full customs for my Hi-Standard Supermatic after a while.

Regarding Larry's question, e-mail or give them a call. Their people I talked to were nice enough and knew what I needed to know. Their site says they can fit anything pretty much but you might have to send them the gun. Photo or photos of their 1911 version of the stocks I got are on their site and that might help as well. So.....have you been shooting with them? How are they? I'm considering a set but there are virtually no reviews out there to go by.

It is my own opinion (and you know what they say about opinions), but I believe that custom grips are a crutch that will teach you bad habits and in the long run hamper your shooting techniques.
I the early days of my shooting, I had Herrett grips on my 1911 wad cutter gun and my Clark Ruger custom 22. I ended up selling both sets of grips as I shot better with factory grips.
