Will someone refresh my memory on the front sight screw dimensions? I would swear that it was #6x48, but I just can't remember.

Now to the heart of the question though. Would it be worth it to drill and tap for a bigger screw to get rid of the ever constant problem of the darned thing loosening up? I was thinking of trying to go with a #8x32 or maybe #8x40 (if there is such a beast). Has anyone given it the ol' college try yet, and how did it work out? Just wondering.

The front sight screw on a Ruger 22 Auto is a 6x40 screw. 6x48 is used almost exclusively on mounting scope mount screws. It is a very fine pitched thread, typically used because drilling and mounting scope bases are usually done through a receiver and the metal in those locations is not very thick. The finer thread has better holding power under those circumstances.

Degrease the screw and the hole really good. Let dry completely.

Put RED locktite on the threads and tighten it down.

Let sit for at least 24 hours before shooting. Should stay put now.

I use a torque wrench and torque to 10 inch lbs.
