MKIII Extended Mag Release ?

Post by recumbent » Mon Nov 12, 2007 6:48 pm

Has anyone extended their mag release on a MKIII pistol?

I'm getting ready to install a set of Hogue thumb rest grips on a MKIII hunter and an extended mag release would be easier to operate with the thumb rest.

Not on a III but I do have one on my MKII. It's a Volquartsen and it's ok, just something about it that I just haven't put my thumb on it yet. But it does work.

I have the vQ extended releases on all my MKII. Love them.

But the MKIII has a mag release like a 1911, 45.

And it is hard to reach with thumbrest grips on the pistol.

I though of drilling and tapping the end of it and using a socket head screw to extend it.

Any other ideas out there????

Now you are on the right track, I believe a #4 socket hed cap screw is about the same diameter as the mag elease and will extend it about 1/8 of an inch. Or you could drill and tap it and use one of the oversize buttons that they put on a 1911 witha # 4 screw.

I have seen a few extended like you described with an Allen screw tapped in from the top. I also have a picture of another style of mag release extension.

That one looks like someone added a knurled knob to the release button. I personally think the Allen screw would be a better modification.

I have put a 1911 extended mag release on two MK III pistols. I drill and tap the mag release button, thread it and screw on the release. I have to file it a little for frame clearance, then take a Dremel tool to the grip to increase the clearance. Works fine.

Never neede it on my 22/45's but always figured that would be an ideal way to do it.

I am getting intrigued by this now. Hey Clem, how about a picture? Gonna end up having to do this just to see if it is something that I would like. Does anyone know if e-gunparts or Brownells sells the mag release parts to tinker with?

I looked for them at Brownells last night but did not see anything that I thought would work good.

I think I'll do the socket head screw thing while I look for something else.

Looks good, always did think ifI did one thatis the way I would go, or posssibly just the capscrew. On my 1911's I just use t .060 extended ons and not the big head.
