A couple weeks a go I opened a bulk back of Winchester high velocity hollow points (Wally World Winchester 555). My Taurus 94 failed to fire about every other round. Figured the gun needed cleaning and put it up.

Today, with a well-cleaned revolver, the Winchester failed at about every other round. I had ejection/feed problems with it using the Kimber .22 conversion. The M17 did ok. Federal 510 fired everytime in all three.

I've had pretty good luck with Winchester ammo, this time it was something else.

Odd, win555 isn't great but I've had good luck with it.

Better that rem550 "golden boogers", almost as good as fed550 red box, nowhere near CCI quality, of course.

Maybe you got a box that had a rough trip? Maybe a bad batch of priming compound?

I'd give it a run in a dependable .22 rifle, if you still have failures then I'd contact Winchester customer service with the ammo lot number and inquire if they've had any other failures.

It's been several years since I have shot any WW 22 ammo. I purchased 10 boxes back when ammo was hard to get. I had a mix of 2 different lots. One lot was good in all my guns. But the other lot seam to vary from box to box. The main problem I had was the rounds would not fully chamber, not going into battery. This was on 2 different guns, 1 rifle and 1 pistol. Cleaning the guns real good had no impact on it. It was plenty accurate but just had feeding problems with this one lot. Once I shot it up have not bought any more WW ammo, just sticking with Fed.

I've had pretty good results with Win T22 and I've had some good luck with this and other bulk winchester ammo. This box sounds like a bad lot and I believe I have another box. May be writing Winchester in a week or so.

Just shoot them a email, they should make it good like Federal does.

10/22 Green Mountain .920 Target Barrel, Caldwell Sandbag rest, 50 yards



No failures. The target on the right was sight adjustment. Not quite so good with the 10/22 with the standard barrel.

Every now and then I get lucky.

The rounds must not be seating all the way against the breech face with the pistol. Clearly the Winchester is detonating properly in the rifle so the inconsistency is in the pistols.

Finickey .22's and .22 ammo.

Last week the Win555 shot pretty well in the MKII GC and MKIII Hunter. Firing was flawless but I was a tad more consistent with groups with the SV 40gr lrn Federal. No failures to fire with the S&W M17, but SV was more consistent. Didn't try the Win in the M17 but it's accuracy did improve, but that had more to do with an elevation screw that didn't have stripped threads than ammo.

Today no FTF's with the Single Six and I was more consistent (accurate) with the Win555 than the Federal.

So, Win555 won't shoot in the Taurus but may be "preferred" ammo for the single six.

Go Figure

This only goes to prove what I've said before - each individual pistol prefers it's own diet of ammunition. You just have to try different ones and see which work the best.

I had a 555 pack of winchester bulk weighing down my range bag with about 450 or so rounds left in it so I shot them up yesterday at the range. I used my Nokia Target, my 10/22 fathoms and dad's o22.... Only one fail to fire and to fail to feed in 450+ round (that could not be mag related. (P22). All shot well at 15 to 25 yards with all three guns. You must've had a box that was open too long and went stale, you can't leave a box of ammo open for a long time once the freshness seal has been broken......

Guilty, but my ammo is Federal so I have a grace period.....

Nothing worse than trying to get rid of the odor of stale .22 ammo. Glad you caught this before it became a serious problem.
