I would like to get a .22 cal pistol, I have a Ruger SR9 that I have put on consignment
at my local dealer.... I can't stand the trigger on the SR9, it is WAY too heavy (8 lbs)
and it is really gritty.......... Plus the fact that ammo is very expensive... I can shoot
100 rounds of .22 cal for about $5.00 vs 20 rounds of 9mm.

Below are pistols I am most interested in.... The Browning Buckmark is the one that
I really want.... But my gun dealer hasn't had any luck in finding me one.
QUESTION: Is there a time of year that the Buckmark's are in more supply?

QUESTION 2: can some one comment on the Sig Mosquito and the Sig Classic's
Triggers?

I have rated the above in the order I would like to have... (1) polished slabside
is in my opinion...the best looking and (2) fiber-optic sight is a definite plus!
(4, 5 & 6) are a little out of my price range.

I really like the design of the buckmarks, and like the URX because I have a larger
hand.... and from reading through all the internet... The buckmarks have a very
smooth easy trigger pull.

Ruger 22/45 Hunter, I would l would like to get the 4.5" barrel BUT I have handled a Mark III and the grip is just not a good fit for me... and unfortunately Ruger designed the 22/45 so that you can not replace the grips (and no I do not want to do the drill mod) and I can not afford the Mark III hunter.

I really like Sig Sauer Mosquito..... But I hear the trigger is really hard to get use to and has a hard trigger pull (maybe only on the double action pull) and that the trigger is gritty (although this may smooth out with some oil and/or after it is broken in). I have also herd that the mosquito has problems with FTF and FTE among other things... But I hear this is due to the ammo and not using the correct spring when using the bulk pack ammo's.
I love the way the Sig Mosquito looks and really like the price of the gun... although paying $40+ for a Magazine is a little ridiculous!!!

Next there is a Sig Sauer P226 CLASSIC .22 cal pistol (model # 226R-22-BAS) this
is AWESOME...... but I really think it is out of my price range.... and I can not find out any info on the trigger.

Buckmark, hands down and going away.

The Mosquito has serious reliability problems and is fussy about ammo.

Also consider a Ruger MK III either "original" or 22/45 if you prefer the ergonomics.

Can't speak to the 226 Classic, but my 9mm 226 is a sweetheart. If the 22 version is as nice, you'll be happy. The DA trigger IS a little heavy, but on my 226 it's consistent and smooth. WAY better than the other two DA semi-autos I've shot, a P89 Ruger and an early S&W that I don't remember the number of.

Sig's with the SRT have a heavy DA (12#+ (spec is 10.5)) but the SA side is very good around 4.5#. The grittiness comes from the use of MIM parts, hammer and sear. I shoot and carry a P229 9mm, mine has had some custom trigger work done by Bruce Gray of GGI. Which cleaned up all of the gritty, heavy trigger new out of the box.

Sig has 22 conversion kits for some of there guns, ~$300.

Don't over look the Ruger MK's as a good reliable cheap shooter with the right ammo. A lot of drop-in upgrade parts are available if you want a better trigger.

As far as ammo cost, I reload for that reason. Even on a 9mm, I can reload for about a 50% + savings.

SR9: A little polishing and the trigger smooths out. Still will be a bit heavy, but will be pretty crisp. I bought one and like it, but I like my M&P9 better. The SR9 is darned easy to shoot accurately. See http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=52057 for tweaks for the SR9. Turned mine from "why did I buy" to "not bad."

Matter of fit and feel. I don't like the Mosquito. Fired a couple and just wasn't my preference.

Buck Mark: I have a Standard. It started out shooting everything well and was easy to shoot darned accurately. It has a good trigger out of the box. After about a year, I started having jamming problems that came from a bent recoil rod. How I managed to bend it, I have no idea. It shoots well again but I've never been as thrilled with the Buck Mark as I have with the Rugers. It's a matter of personal preference.

Rugers: I prefer the steel Rugers with Hogue grips. I also have 22/45's. You can either get a 22/45 RP with changeable grip panels or buy grip panels for the standard 22/45's from a fellow whose screen name is Techteach. They really improve the skinny MKIII 22/45 grips.

S&W 22A: My first .22 semiauto and one I really like. A very simple, inexpensive and accurate shooter.

If you like to tinker, the Rugers are great pistols. If I were going to have just one .22 pistol, I believe it would be my Ruger MKIII Hunter.

Do your best gun counter looking. If you can find a place that allows you to try them out, spend a bit of money give a couple a whirl. I this class, I'm not sure there is a best on, just a best one for you.

Browning hands down to the other. But a serious look should be given to the Ruger as I prefer not to remove screws to clean a gun.

If those are the choices then the Buckmark for sure. It's a quality pistol.

My wife bought the Mosquito because it was small and light. She now likes
my Mk.3 6" a lot. The trigger on the Mosquito leaves a lot to be desired with a much heavier pull and a lot of take up. It is easy to clean (she likes that). I have fired a buckmark and did not mind the trigger although my Mk.3 with volquartsen sear is much better. Given those choices, go Buckmark.

If I had to choose between the Browning Buckmark & the SIG Mosquito I would also choose the Browning..
But given the choice of a Ruger MKII/MKIII with Volquartzen Trigger Kit or the Browning I'd have to choose the Ruger..

Welcome Steve! I love the BuckMarks as they can be what ever you want even if your needs change. This is my 1985 purchased on the cheap at a GS. They have a very nice single action trigger usually out of the box. This one has a 4" TacSol light weight threaded for suppressor barrel and the TS sight mounting rail that has the iron sights and a place for a red dot. It is accurate and reliable with inexpensive magazines and spare parts easily available.


I also own a SIG Mosquito and it is one of the few double action semi auto 22RF pistols. Mine has been excellent with no drama. It is used to practice with the look/feel of a SIG 226/229. It is very inexpensive to make in to a suppressor host just by replacing the barrel ($30)nut with a threaded one. The 22RF occasionally benefits from being struck twice which is easy with the double action. Of the two the BuckMarks is a hands down favorite, and I've bought them from pawn shops and Gun Broker. They are worth the search. Regards

First off..... Thank You to everyone that replied... I really appreciated it!!!

I was getting very discouraged after hearing my gun dealer saying that he had no idea when he would be able to get a Browning Buck Mark in.

I looked at Brownings website... and found that there were 2 "stores" that were "full line and medallion" Dealers.

1st I went to "Wholesale Sports" and they had 1 Buckmark in stock... an ECLIPSE for $440, very nice gun... but did not have the ultragrip RX... something I really wanted.
The salesman was very helpful and said that they have the "camper" at a different store... It did have the truglo front sight but did not have the ultragrip on it... price was $340 I gave him my phone # and told him I was going to check the competitor down the street.

Went to "Big R" and took a look in the gun case.... and OMG ... there were 3 Buckmarks in the case... a basic "camper" for $290 and what I think was a "challenge" for $360 ....... and could not believe my eyes ... They had the buckmark that was #1 on my list... the "standard urx" $360 slabside with polished flats and the ULTRAGRIP RX.... He handed it to me and it felt PERFECT.... I asked how many he had in stock.... he said that's it... I said then you have NONE in stock, I'll take it

Got home cleaned her up... and went into a shooting area in the forest... If I had to rate the Buck Mark Standard URX on a scale of 1-10..... I would rate it at a 15 !!! It was a absolute pleasure to shoot.

I shot off 100 rounds of the federal "eagle" ammo..... and on shot 87 I had my one and only problem... a FalureToEject.

OH..... and when I got home the phone rang.... It was wholesale sports and the very nice salesman called to tell me that 3 "buckmark campers" came in yesterday and that they had not been put into the system yet.... Someone was on my side with this one... because if he had this gun when I was there I would of purchased it.... and would not of gone to Big R where they had exactly what I wanted.

Glad to hear you found what you were looking for. The AE that I have seen have 40 rounds per box, 38gr HP (AE22). These are my hunting rounds, very accurate.

I think the standard is better than the camper. Looks and sounds like you done pretty good. Congrats.

Nice pistol! I like happy endings. A little checking around usually provides the opportunity to take home what you want. It's the folks with "gotta have it now" syndrome who usually end up settling for something other than their first choice.
