Were the Early Ruger Standards ever marked MKI

Post by teejay » Wed Oct 07, 2009 9:35 pm

I have posted this question on other forums, so if you've already seen this, please forgive the repetition. Were the Standard Ruger Automatic Pistols, i.e. the ones with the fixed sights, ever marked MK1? I know that MK II and MKIII Standards are marked as such, but were the original 1949-82 ones? I asked this on another forum and received a photo of a fixed sighted Standard marked "MKI." I don't know if I was being put on, or if it was legitimate. When I revisited the post, the picture had been deleted. Anyone have such an experience? TJ

The answer is no. Only the pistols with adjustable target sights, and later ones with bull barrels and adjustable sights were roll marked with the "Mark I" label. The early standards had no markings and technically are not Mark I pistols, the were Ruger .22 Automatic pistols. Most folks call them by that "Mark I" name only in reference to the generation of pistol that they came from. When the Mark II models came out in 1982, the fixed sight versions retained the "Standard" name, since the frame was now modified, all the pistols of that generation, both standard and target, wore the "Mark II" name on the receiver. The same is true for the Mark III's. It is possible that an early receiver may have been improperly marked with the "Mark I" label, or that the original barrel was changed out that receiver for one with fixed sights but this is not true for the entire early Standard line.

Thanks Bullseye. I went around and around with this fellow. I was supported in my belief that only target sighted early Rugers were marked MKI. He did, as I mentioned, supply a picture of the gun in question but only the role marks and the fixed sight. I think he was trying to put one over on us. Some people get their kicks in odd ways. Anyway, I take YOUR word as good as gold on this, any many other topics. Thanks for reaffirming my belief. TJ
