Changing the Recoil Spring on a Ruger MKII
I am sure Bullseye has probably done this before and hopefully can share some insight.
How does a person go about changing the recoil spring on a Ruger MKII?
Is there some trick to getting the recoil spring guide rod apart and back together again? Or is it advisible to just order the assembly complete?
Thanks
Larry

I am about 99% sure you have to replace the whole assembly. Ruger peens the end of the guide rod to keep the spring in place, if one was to narrow this to get the spring off, it would ruin the heat treatment of the metal. You would encounter the same problem on the other end.
If you need a lighter or stiffer recoil spring, you could change the mainspring and get same effect. I believe Wolf makes some springs for such a use.

At times my bolt won't go completely closed when feeding a round. Yes I have cleaned the heck out of it, tried different lubes. Switching the recoil springs & guide rods seemed to solve the problem on the MKII.
What got me to thinking it was the recoil spring is a guy at the indoor shooting range was having a similar problem with his MKII and during a match his recoil spring finally broke in half.
Since I have swapped mine out the MKII works fine.
