I've been batting around the idea of upgrading the sights on my MKIII 5 1/2" bull barrel for a while. I want something with more contrast than the black on black factory sights. Ideally, I don't want to spend more than $30-35 on them. I can live with just replacing the front sight, but preferably, I'd end up with an adjustable rear sight as well. Can anyone suggest what to look for or what to avoid? Would I be better off, for that price range, just dabbing a little red nail polish on the front sight?

What other gun models have interchangable sights with my gun?

For a nifty solution, look at Nitesiters. These are adhesive glow dots that work very well. I have them on the front sight of all my guns that came with no contrast sights. Works great and $10 for an 8 pack...

What are you trying to accomplish? What kind of shooting are you doing? Are you looking for fast target acquisition, target focus, or competitive bullseye?

Ruger has fiber optic front sights that will fit and you can get a v-notched rear, more suitable for hunting. I think the service page of the forum here has the instructions on how to swap.

If you are shooting bullseye, then keep the sights as is. Play with paint and/or stickers.

I hit mine with a file to create imperfections I could look for to provide cues for front sight focus. Nothing else has worked as well.

I've used a dab of Testor's orange on a pistol front sight and found that it helped. I have a Hunter with Hi-Viz sights. There are times I like them and times I don't. The easiest way to check front sight color enhancements is paining. If you don't like it, the change is easy.

I'm just shooting holes in paper and lately I've been thinking that having a little color at the front would help me keep my focus on the front sight better and achieve a faster target acquisition.

Try that, nail polish or some bright paint.

Different sights tend to accomplish different things, so try that before you swap out the target sights.

Another thought for target shooting is to make the transition to a red dot sight.
