Federal Value Pack Observations
This probably has more to do with my shooting ability, but...
I spent some time shooting my Hunter, GC and Buck Mark Standard at 25 yards with a variety of ammo. The targets were 6" Shoot'n See. With Fed Automatch, Federal Champion (40gr SV), Winchester 36gr hp and Xpert 22 I had fair groups and could see POI changes when I adjusted the sights. When I shot Federal Value Pack (Walmart Fed 36gr hp hv), there were a number of high hits, outside and above the target. I thought it was grouping reasonably well and was surprised by the number of high hits. When I went back to the other ammo, I didn't see the high strikes.
The Fed Val pack has always seemed a bit more variable than other ammo and I've had these high strikes before. I've always put it down to my technique. It could very well be, but now I'm not so convinced.

Rob, remember that I have seen you shoot. Honestly that Wall World Fed bulk stuff is very erratic, and soimtimes you can tell where the round is going by the report of the round firing. Can see the hole go higher through the scopes on the 10/22's.

Ouch, ouch, ouch. Sure not getting any respect here
The OP was more of an observation after I left the range. I noticed it while I was shooting, switched ammo and didn't think about it. I almost never shoot pistols from a rest. And I'm still denying old age vision by shooting open sights. I didn't think about it then but the range is set up so I could have very easily. These shots were about 4" higher than the others. I could well have been heeling those shots (loose nut behind the trigger). I just realized I wasn't doing it with the other ammo.
Didn't get bagged until after I finished the honey doos.
I think I may put the 4x Leuopold back on the Hunter and give it a whirl from a rest. Might be a way to check ammo consistency. If not, Kaz, I'll have a supply at your nearest WalMart.

Rob, when you were here I should have brought out the Great Eight with the 6-24x42 Tasco on it and let you shoot it from my custom made rest with the heel stabilizer on the grip to stop the wobble. Will e ,ail you a pic of some of the groups I have shot with it.

So Bear's Daddy, you actually have a wobble stablizer? Is that a hold over from your motorcycle days? I seem to remember my bike going into a wobble that wasn't good.
greener, I admire your iron sight ability. I'm addicted to the red dots, but I still do some iron sight work to stay in the game. It feels good. Regard

It would have been a thrill to shoot the Great 8. We ought to give it a try next time I venture to the frozen north.
Kaz, I have a Bushnell trophy red dot on my 22A and a BSA 30 that moves around. Just haven't been using them on the Rugers, Buck Mark or P22 (mess adding a rail to that one). I've also been pushing the open sights as long as possible, but it looks like I'm either due for a change of glasses, a strobe light on the front sight or making the red dot manufacturer's rich. Seems that the QC in pistol manufacture is getting bad, they are all beginning to make blurry front sights.
Heck, even the bad days are fun. Gotta admit it's more fun to make the center of the target disappear.

Old woodworkers can come up with a lot of things from scrap wood, I didn't get this old by being stupid or did I???????KAZ wrote:Yes! fine work for certain. Great feat of engineering on the heel wobble stabilizer
That 8 inch pistol will shoot as good at 25 yards as most of my 10/22's will.
Have to put the scope and wobble stabilizer on one of my P512's and give it a try one of these daya, if memory serves me right it did well in the past

I put the 4x Leupold scope on my MKIII Hunter and tried some shooting from an improvised rest (wood blocks) at 25 yards. The Federal Value pack had the worst groups compared with Fed Champion, Fed Automatch and Winchester 36gr hp. A few rounds went high, but not as much as my unsupported off-hand shooting. Len was right, it had something to do with the nut behind the trigger.
Yesterday was probably not the best day to try this since my entertainment Saturday involved 8 yards of dirt, a Kubota, shovels, rakes and axes.

Rob, the problem with most guns is the trigger operator. You could give me the most accurate gun made and I could shoot poorly with it. That WW ammo is quite erratic, but what do you expect for the price? It is good for plinking but not meant serious target work. I bought almost a case of Fiocchi LSP, plain lead bullet ammo from Midway some time back and is seems to shoot great in most of my guns, rifle or pistol. Shot a few mags of my handloads in the Micro yesterday at 25 feet rapid fir and it groups about 2 minutes of Felon as my old Cop instruct ore would say.
Glad you had a fun Saturday and no me. If you mention dirt and hand operated earth moving tools in the same breath, I get very nervous and usually have to leave the site rapidly.
