Newby reporting for duty.

I bought a new handgun in spite of all the people that have a steep initial learning curve on this gun. I need some help.

The mainspring housing won't open past 1/2 inch. The clip won't go in (again) and of course it won't fire with the clip out.

I worked with it for a half hour and walked away. I went back later with a cooler head (and Bulleye's help) and aced the little critter.

This is a way complex weapon as compared to my Beretta NEOS U-22.

I'm fixin to shoot it for the first time Tommorow.

Welcome to the forum, Bulls eyes help and especially a KOOLER HEAD will overcome a lot of problems. The KOOLER HEAD will help in a lot of situations.

Glad to see you got the MKIII apart! Now for the fun part of owning one, getting it all fouled up with gunpowder residues! Let us know how you think it compares with the Neos.

The NEOS doesn't impress me at all. Mine is just one year old and has been a pain. It's out of the Gunsmith's shop right now, (Since yesterday) and working well, but I have a buyer lined up before the next disappointment.

The MKIII is what the local shop/range rents and I have been pretty impressed with their accuracy, but have never cleaned them. I'm pretty mechanical and should get a handle on it soon.

My wife said she read something on Rugers site that they don't recommend certain ammo, but I haven't looked at the exact wording yet. I think a strict diet of CCI Stingers keeps some of my other .22LR guns cleaner, but we clean them after every outing anyway.

I will report back about the gun's likes and dislikes after I have some time to squeeze off a few. Had I reported on the NEOS the first month I owned it, I'd have said it was great.

You sound like you are considering buying one, the warranty is one year, if you send in the card, it adds two more years. I didn't, you really should.

I hope it was my little e-mail message this morning that helped get you over the top with that new 22/45 pistol. Glad you got it solved, sometimes the littlest things can really get under our skin. I look forward to many more exchanges of ideas here on the forum. There's a really great group of folks here!

As far as your Ruger, if you stay away from the ultra high velocity rounds you should get more mileage out of it. They're pretty hard to destroy but Rugers can get battered on the bolt stop from the Velocitors and the Stingers.

I've looked at the Neos off and on, but really haven't gotten excited about them. Just interested in opinions and comparisons. One of these days I may wander past one when mood and price are right.

I shot a box of stingers some time ago. I don't think any of my pistols liked them. Mine seem to like 40gr SV (CCI, Fed Champions), Fed automatch, Fed and Winchester 36gr hp and Xpert22. They all seem to work well in my Rugers, 22A and P22.

Yes, thanks for the info. It was invaluable. Reinventing the wheel is a slow process and your tip was all that was needed to get my field stripping and reassembly up to par in minutes.

I didn't know that stingers were that hard on guns. With all the rounds I shove through the little hole, I'll go back to Western X 333 (any comments?) now that they sell them at Wally World. I only poke holes in paper and don't need any varmint knock down power but I like a consistent punch to fight varying drop at the target distance/s. Some of the stuff on the market is really borderline IMHO.

It took me a while to figure out that the presence or absence of the magazine is critical to reassembly. If something isn't working it generally means I have the magazine out when it should be in, or vice versa.

I think my brain let out a little squeaker when reassembling it the first time. Holding the trigger seemed to be omitted. I now play 'Mother May I' in strict accordance to the Ruger manual.

Okay, first time out, I like it better than the Neos. The trigger is much better, and I may be able to live with the pull as is. (We shall see about that)

Quite accurate, great feel, no jams. Remington smokes a lot, Western X 333 feels right.

It seems to me, (I'm talking to some experts here I realize) that the first top round in the clip needs to be lifted up at the point, and shoved into a gun with the bolt open and everything will be okay.

If I do not lift the point of the top round, or cram the clip into a closed bolt, the first round will jam forward and not load. It just might need a couple hundred rounds run through the gun. I only took one clip with me today, I'll try the other soon.

So far, so good. I like it better than the NEOS, and the grip is much less tiring to my hand.
