Im going to make a set of grips and want to see what you all thought about wood types. I see alot of walnut in grips and stocks, is there a reason for this or will oak or cherry ,etc. work just as well. Just a thought. Bullseye what tool did you use for the checking? Any advice would be great. Did I mention that I love this forum?

Grips are typically constructed out of hardwood. A tight grained style of hardwood is best. You don't see very many grip styles made from Oak because that is a more of an open grained hardwood.
I used a set of Dembart hand checkering tools. I've had them for many years. I believe the pattern I used in my grips were 20 lines per inch.
A good sturdy polyurethane finish or Tung Oil is best. That style of finish resists the oils and solvents associated with firearms.

I have never made any grips but have refinished a lot of stocks over the years. I have used polyurethane and tung oil. Tung oil is my favorite finish.

I also am a huge fan of the Tung oil
A few coats and anything can look pretty.
