As luck would have it, I'm having a similar problem with my 22/45. Midweek, I had one complete freeze up of the trigger. Nothing moved. A few shots later, the trigger bounced back heavily after a shot, sort of careening into my retreating trigger finger.
Today, after about 30 rounds, I began noticing a heavier trigger pull and then a much heavier trigger pull to release. Soon after (at about 90 - 100 rounds, it froze up solid again. Racked the slide, fired a few rounds before it froze up again. It did so every few rounds over the next 15 - 20, before I gave up. The trigger seemed to come back in the pull and then gave a very slight click each time it locked up. Most of the time this happened, I couldn't lift the safety up. It was frozen, too.
Once during the later stages when the frozen trigger was happening more often, the gun returned to a fairly light and nice enough trigger for most a one magazine. But then it went south again.
I'll try to attend to some of the ideas presented here for steel plate, and will change sears and try to get out tomorrow to test it, to see if that makes a difference. It's never happened before putting this sear in.
This sear barely reached to the hammer bearing surface by visual inspection and my Dykem test the other day. The hammer's had a fair amount of use before I put the new sear in.

With the barrel off you should be able to check the safety operation. VQ has had some problems with some of the sears being High. If this is the case contact VQ they will send you a new one. VQ has been backing there products 100%.
As far as sear/hammer engagement normally this is around ~0.020" if a clark bushing, or ~0.30" if a stock Ruger sear. So yes there is very little engagement, this is normal with all guns.

Changed to another sear and fired 250 rounds today without the trigger freezing up. It's not the trigger pull I want, but it's improved with the Clark hammer bushing.
I took two measurements of the VQ sear that you say may be too high. From top of the sear face to bottom of the sear, the newest VQ that's been in the gun when the trigger freezes up yields a measurement of 0.540". This is sort of an overall height measurement. The older sear that I placed in the gun when the gun functioned successfully today has an overall height of 0.535".
I also tried to measure the distances in these two sears from the top of the sear pin hole to the face of the sear. The newer sear measured 0.356" in this way. The older sear, 0.343". All four were difficult measurements even with quality calipers, but this is about the best I could do.
Right now the gun seems to work with the older sear, so I'm going to try to work with it. It's a sear with an uneven edge, but since the Clark bushing helps somewhat and I'm pressed for time, I'm going to practice with it as best I can. I'm going to post a question about it on the doing my own action work thread I started earlier.

Just a up date. I had a sear that was to tall to work with the stock trigger. Tried alot of things and could not get it to work. I bought a VQ adjustable trigger and everything works as it should. So in my gun MarkIII 22/45 you need a VQ sear and VQ adjustable trigger for everything to work smoothly.
