Ruger Mark 3 Light Primer Strikes
Moderators: Bullseye, Moderators
Well I ordered the vq extractor but decided to throw in the towel anyway before trying the new extractor. I called Ruger and they sent a call tag. It is on the way to them now.
I put all stock parts back in including magazine disconnect, factory sear, loaded chamber indicator and factory hammer bushing. I tried the pistol with all factory parts in and still had light strikes. I can say without a doubt that it was not the vq sear.
I still think it is the magazines as they sit very very loose in the mag well. How do other Mark 3 owners magazines fit. My Mark 2 fits very snug in the mag well.
I shall report back when the hopefully fixed gun comes back from Ruger.
Happy Shooting.

Well yesterday I got a chance to test the Mark 3 as it came back from Ruger. I ran 80 rounds of federal bulk thru it. I had 1 dud but put it back in the gun and tried 2 more times and it still did not go bang. I am convinced since the round had 3 dings around the rim that it was a bad round. The primer striked appear deeper now.
Hopefully this fixed the problem.
Thanks for all the replies.

Coming in way late to an interesting conversation. My response is only anecdotal compared to the experienced expert.
Perhaps you will see improvement by installation of the VQ extractor. I had a very similar problem. Though not as often as you've had, still often enough to make feeding and ignition somewhat testy. Installed the VQ and have not had the problem even once in many thousands of rounds in my two Mark II era 22/45's. Good luck.

Whoops. Not only came in late, also didn't use my noggin. Looks like everything's probably copasedic. Good shooting.

thin rims?
I had a problem with my mark 2 that would not ignite rounds where the cartridge had it's rim on the thin side. I would get a shallow firing pin hit but no ignition.
In my case I saved a number of the cartridges that would not fire even with multiple tries and measured the thickness of those rims and found out they were on the thin side. My solution was to reduce the head space on my bolt and the problem went away. If your gun is still acting up with all you have done, you may want to check that.

Well the light strikes started again!
I wanted to give an update. After sending the gun back to Ruger and they replaced the trigger stop screw the gun functioned flawlessly for about 1000 rounds - then started to light strike just like before.
I called Ruger and they sent a call tag. They said "we take it very seriously when a gun comes back a second time for the same problem."
They had my gun back in my hands in about 10 working days.
The work order is as follows:
Barrel/Receiver Assembly - Repaired
Ejector -Repaired
Extractor - Replaced
Firing Pin Stop - Replaced
As far as the Barrel Receiver Assembly it looks like they dremmeled out the frame just behind where the slide stop sits in the frame.
I have put about 200 rounds thru it since coming back from Ruger and it is flawless so far.
I don't know what the problem was but I suspect the magazine was not fitting in as tight as it should but I could be all wet.
We are good for now. I don't go to the range without this gun as it is so much fun to shoot.
