Got my my MKII yesterday!

Used of course, but not to bad. I was a little dissapointed when it only came with one mag. The other couldnt be found. Anyway I gave it a good cleaning without the breakdown. I'm going to go put some rounds through it sometime today and then give it a more thorough cleaning. I hear its a bugger to get back together. I'm looing for a manual, does anyone know where I can find one? And down the road I'm thinking I might like to have a red dot mounted on it. Does anyone know what is involved there?

It's not hard to get back together, but is really confusing the first time. You have to have the hammer back to put the barrel on, the pull the trigger and flip the hammer forward, do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around. http://guntalk-online.com/service.html has procedures for stripping, it lists Mark III but the Mark II strips the same way.

Once I did it a time or two I can pull it apart, clean and lube it, reassemble and dry fire in less than ten minutes.

IMHO, the cost of a smith to drill-tap and provide a rail,
is a poor investment... given that YOUR 2nd MK can be

The Guntalk forums are the best place to go for Ruger Mark information. Reassembly of the Marks is tricky and can be frustrating the first few times; it really is important that you take your time, read carefully, and take your time, and read carefully (breathing helps, too!).

Check out the Technical Forum on this website for awesome instructions...there are also lots of "how to" videos on the net that can help supplement the instructions in the Tech' sub-forum (note: some videos are better than others, so if you get confused, try another video). On my fourth attempt to reassemble, I had it down and haven't needed instructions since.

It came with a leupold m8-2x with clamp type mount...Very nice and might just as well be jut a good as red dots....very clear.....I was surprised to see they were 218$ new.....If red dots are better I should be able to turn this one and reinvest in something else..

And whats the least expensive trigger mod I can do for this thing. Its kinda heavy as expected. I've read a little about the VQ Mod, but have read somewhere too that the $100 is not necessary. Any thoughts?

Welcome to our forum and as far as a trigger mod, just get a VQ sear and you willl have about a 2# trigger. Adjusting the overtravel screw in the trigger and adding a pretravel screw also will help.

You got to remember that when he and I got acquainted 50 years ago or better, things were a lot different. There were none of the BIG BOX sporting goods stores around at that time, Hell, I don't think anyone ever pictured things as they are now. I sure know I didn't. He is a gunsmith and so is his son that works with him. He and I are about the same age and our oldest sons are the same age. Younger people of this day have not had the chances to make friends like we did in the older days, things were sure a lot simpler and safer then. Never thought I would see the day when I would carry a gun any time I left the house. I am too young to die and too damn old to take a whoopin, so I am armed and dangerous.

Go out and shoot your pistol a few times before tearing it apart. Get a feel for it. This way, when you make upgrades you'll have an appreciation for the degree that they make your pistol better.

Take an old service tech's advice, this works on engines or guns. Make one modification at a time and the use it, if not you will never know what helped and what hindered.

If I were going to change the trigger, I'd do the VQ sear and trigger mod at the same time. You get the lightened pull and the adjustable trigger. Any other mod's, I'd do one at a time.

Bullseye's advice to shoot it for a while without making any mods is spot on. You may like the trigger just as it is, you may or may not like the scope. I've done trigger/sear additions to 4 Rugers. I've shot all of them for some time before making any changes to the trigger.

VQ sear and the trigger mod kind of go together or you can change the trigger with one that has external adjustments.Although once you get the internal adjustments made you don't have to mess with them again.
