Ugly Rust On My 41s

I have one of those range bags that has a removable sleeve on each side to accommodate one pistol. Then you can pull the sleeve out and it gives a nice protective pad to lay a pistol on the shooting bench between shots. So, I go to get my 7" & 5.5" 41s out to enjoy some range time. I'm looking right down at them to lift them out and I see visible rust on the part of the back strap where the web of your hand grasps the 41 to fire. I freak out! I don't have rust on my weapons! This can't be,but it is! I can almost hear the long ago distant voice of a very angry DI going berserk with me the victim. So, I recover and proceed to shoot some dime size groups that only these fine tools can deliver resisting the temptation to deal with the rust at the range. Later at home with some Rem Oil and fine steel wool the bloom of surface rust comes right off with no rust anywhere else of course. No harm to the finish, just to my pride

. Perhaps I can be forgiven somewhat by continuing to shoot in the extremely hot (106 degrees)humid days that we have experienced. Regards

It happens, at least you found it quickly and used the right remedy for removing the corrosion. Just think what could have been if you only shot twice a year or less, like so many ordinary people do with their firearms.

I'll let you in on another little secret. Don't keep your pistol in a foam lined gunbox. The lubricating and preservative oils will eventually break down the foam, and then the resulting foam goo is highly corrosive to steel. Many folks leave their pistols in boxes like that and learn too late when they find pits in their highly prized possession.

Spray periodically with RIG or better yet use the RIG RUG with nice dose of rig. No finger wust with that.

thanks langenc, I actually have a bottle of RIG. I had forgotten about it, I'll give it a try. Rust shouldn't be so bad now that it has cooled off some(85 instead of 107) , and my hands aren't so sweaty. Regards

Try some Eezox. It is probably the best and it dries to a non oily finish. Perfect for .22's for lubrication and perfect for all firearms as a protectorant.

I'm a Eezox fan and the 41 was protected with Eezox at the time of the rust. The only light surface rust on two 41s was in the "hollow" where the web of your hand grips the 41. It is a pronounced deep curve and I suspect that I didn't do a good job of applying the Eezox in this area. I was at the range shooting in 107 degree temps which caused my grip to be sweaty in the extreme. I shouldn't have been there at all

,but the 41 was new and I wanted to shoot it. I have reapplied the Eezox with attention to this area. There was no rust anywhere else,just this one area and it was very light and rubbed right off. Now left that way without attention would have not been good. Regards
